In all, nine attacks took place through the day in Nagaland and Assam states, both of which have faced campaigns by separatist rebels, police officials in the two states told The Associated Press.
Two powerful bombs exploded minutes apart in Nagaland, killing 26 people and injuring 84, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, the state's top elected official, told The Associated Press after a visit to the sites.
Within hours, seven other attacks took place in the neighboring Assam state. A total 18 people were killed in the attacks, most when gunemn opened fire in a market place in the small town of Makri Jhoda, said local Superintendent of Police L.R. Bishnoi.
