Prewitt has worked in the Voter Registration office for 28 years. Her first presidential election was 1976. She says this is by far the most interest she's seen in voting.

Land said nearly 7 million Michigan residents have registered to vote so far, already beating the record set in 2000, when 6,859,332 people registered. The draw this year, as in 2000, is a close and contentious presidential race that has political parties and advocacy groups signing up new voters to try and help their candidates.

Presidential election years are always busier than other years but officials say they are definitely working harder than they did in 2000 when George W. Bush faced off against Al Gore.
Montgomery County director of voter services Joe Passarella said his office has been inundated with new registrations and other paperwork. As of last week, the county had 28,575 new registrations and about 40,000 change-of-address requests since May 1. The county has a "few thousand in backlog."
"Four years ago it was busy, too," Passarella said. "It just seems really busy. There just seems to be a lot more voter (registration) drives.
"I have even gotten messages at home from people trying to get me to register to vote."
He is, as you might expect, already registered.
