Cameras revealed a man in pain
October 2, 2004

WASHINGTON - Republican media consultant Adam Goodman has some standard advice for his clients before a debate. "The camera is always on," he tells them. "Every angle is potentially live."

Democratic consultant Karl Struble tells his clients the same thing, and says they should "look interested" when their opponent is talking. He tells them that if they don't like the other candidate's comments, "you should be smiling and shaking your head, as opposed to frowning."

If President Bush got that advice, it was not evident during his debate Thursday night against Sen. John Kerry. While Kerry spoke, Bush appeared miffed.

"Bush looked real nervous. Bush was mad. He kept frowning," Pam Russell, a Detroit retiree, told the Associated Press.

Actually, that's not hard work for Smirko at all. He LIKES being an asshole, and if you really really like something, it's never hard work.

3. His handlers tried, Shrub failed!
I've heard all day that his handlers tried through weeks of training to teach him to get rid of the smirk, don't show anger, be calm and look like a leader. Shrub failed them. Wonder if they have enough cohones to call him on it?

46. unfortunately for bush, he's been living and functioning in a
bubble of artificial construct for a very long time and hasn't had to deal with issues on the outside of it. His handlers are partly to blame for the whole thing because at some point in time, they had to know that bush was going to have to face a situation outside of this comfortable bubble and if he couldn't say more than what rove tells him to say, they were going to be in big trouble.

In his bubble, he doesn't have to worry about his facial expressions because for the longest time, every time he spoke, it seems, he's used them to punctuate his vile message--and the 'by invitation only' audiences have sucked and swallowed the 'false phallus' every time, giving him the false impression that it's an effective ploy in the positive, not the detriment, to getting his message and will across.

Outside the bubble, it doesn't work. In the real world where the rest of the 'help' lives, he doesn't get any comfortable insulation and a "aw shucks, folks, there he goes again..." He was outside of his depth during the debate and looked like a man who was drowning but trying to play it off.

Debates and being under pressure are Kerry's depths--anyone who has taken the time to familiarize themselves with Kerry's career knows he's been tested under fire in both Viet Nam and during the Senate hearings--when the king of corrupt presidents--Nixon--and his boy, Kissinger couldn't even stem Kerry's tide. Bush was spending his time getting drunk and burning off brain cells while Kerry was honing his messages. Therefore, it isn't any wonder that Kerry cleaned bush's clock for him.

13. Keep in mind, that this is the first time in four years
that W had to appear before a crowd of people what weren't cheering his every sound bite. The first time in four years, he couldn't control the questions. The first time in four years that he had to face an opponent who would stand up to him and dare question his leadership. No wonder he was in such a pissy mood. Poor little Georgie Porgy has such a fragile ego.

24. Well, like he told Bob Woodward,
“ I’m the commander. See, I don’t have to explain why I say things. That’s the interesting thing about being the president. Maybe somebody needs to explain to me why they say something, but I don’t feel like I owe anybody an explanation.”

29. Excellent points.
In the debates 4 years ago with Gore, Bush obviously didn't have that "I'm the commander" mind-set. While Gore was Vice President, he was no more "entitled" to the presidency than was the Governor of Texas. By the Bush-Kerry debate, that "I don't have to explain" attitude was too deeply imprinted in what passes for Bush's brain.

I watched and taped C-SPAN's broadcast, which covered the entire debate in the split-screen "podium watch" format. What a revelation! I have since watched the entire debate with the sound off, just to watch the differences in body language.

The result was equally disturbing and hilarious, like the movie "Train Spotting."

21. They missed the trances
"trance" is a term used in games like bridge or chess indicating that a player has frozen because he's trying to think of what to do next. In chess, these can last for hours. If you're trying to get in two rubbers of bridge during a lunch hour, it's rude to be longer than a minute.

In a debate, especially with a national audience, it's absolutely fatal.

It's hard to stomach watching him.

voice of god in his head that bush was telling to shut-up.
Or maybe it was the voices of dead soldiers that he

Or any of the other voices that are in his head telling
him to kill people.

Judging from the way he talked, his slowness in responding to non-rehearsed lines, and his constant drinking of water, I wondered when I watched if he was on mood-altering drugs. Actually, I've often wondered if Bush is on anti-anxiety medication.

He looks like a man about to break. The pressure will be his undoing.

In probably the second debate I expect him to snap. That will be the defining "Bush Moment" for which everyone will remember him. All those chemicals will come back to haunt him.

Now that would be a truly enjoyable "October Surprise".

51. One of the funniest quotes from that article:
But Goodman, the Republican consultant, said Bush's reactions "were very real and genuine" because he was so unhappy with Kerry's comments.

"People want to see what's underneath," he said. "They saw that from the president."

Yeah - people saw what's underneath, all right - a simpering, smoldering, arrogant, smirking, idiotic evil little asshole excuse for a human being (with apologies to real human beings everywhere).
