Update: St. Helens Eruption 'Imminent' (new tremor Sunday am)
http://www.komotv.com/stories/33335.htm

MOUNT ST. HELENS - Scientists detected a volcanic tremor at Mount St. Helens early Sunday, just hours after officials raised the volcano's alert level, cleared hundreds of visitors from the area and warned a major eruption was imminent.

Late Saturday, scientists flew past the volcano to measure its emissions. USGS spokeswoman Stephanie Hanna said for the first time in this Volcano Alert the instruments are detecting elevated levels of carbon dioxide, which escapes as magma rises toward the surface from the Earth's interior.

1. The mountain speaks again!
As an Oregonian who clearly remembers the "big one" of 5/18/80, and the subsequent ones that sent a lot of ash my way, I am watching with great interest and I confess a bit of excitement this latest development. St. Helens isn't done with us yet. Hope everyone is out of harm's way, but this particular act of nature is IMHO a wonder to behold!

Stay tuned!

4. I saw it too
This may turn out to be a pretty good show. The weather is perfect.

I was out that way last week, and I was amazed at the development around Swift. It used to just be woods, and now it's a fully developed yuppy getaway. Maybe it was a bit dangerous builing all of those houses so close to an angry volcano.

13. Still waiting for the show!
You'll have a better view than I--I'm back east of the mountains now. Have heard of Swift but not too sure just where it is. I was in Seattle a couple of weeks ago, can't recall seeing a freeway exit listing Swift. You're right about building the houses too close to the angry volcano. But I live not far from the Three Sisters and keep hearing about the growing bulge on one of them that's being closely watched. So I might be re-thinking my decision to live in the shadow of what could be another angry volcano!

I get several Portland channels over here, so watching them and waiting for the next installment.

Be safe and...

5. A thought ....

Too bad Bush isn't a virgin -- I'm assuming those really are his kids, of course. Two birds ... one stone.

6. I love this--thanks for the chuckle!!
I'm thinkin', though...there'd be a long line of folks who'd like to toss him into the crater. Arrive early, folks!

10. She's smokin'!
Edited on Sun Oct-03-04 04:01 PM by bain_sidhe
check the cam... I'm sure I see a puff of smoke that wasn't there a few minutes ago. I'm looking at the one ID'd as 13:54 PDT (1:54 for us non-military types) That would be 4:54 for EDT

11. Ooh! Hot Lava!!!
Since everybody seemed pretty good-natured about evacuating yesterday, I'll assume everyone is out of harm's way. Bring on the Fireworks! (and some new, improved Ash Masks. ;))

12. Well, maybe not... must have been a cloud
'cause a couple of hours later, nothing has happend.

I'm assuming everybody's evacuated too. Read on the site that even the observatory personnel have bugged out - the camera's on automatic.

15. This ain't over; it's barely even begun
Edited on Mon Oct-04-04 06:15 PM by imac_mafia
Looks like she's just in the process of waking up again. Magma is definitely moving up the fissures, the USGS scientists say, and the little steam and ash eruptions are going to look pretty small when the impending eruption eventually happens.

Anyway, I'd like to invite all who are interested in Mount St. Helens and/or other North Cascades volcanoes to join the new Mount St. Helens/North Cascades Volcanoes discussion forums:

16. Lava - B52's
Lava - B52's

My body's burnin' like a lava from a Mauna Loa
My heart's crackin' like a Krakatoa
Krakatoa, east of Java, molten bodies, fiery lava

Fire, fire, burnin' bright
Turn on your love lava
Turn on your lava light
Fire, oh volcano, over you
Don't let your lava love turn to stone
Keep it burnin'
Keep it burnin' here at home

Oooo Hot Lava
Oooo Hot Lava

My love may be as high as the highest volcano
But the altitude is way too high
Well it gets so cold when you look at me that way---yeah
I just wanna have that hot lava
Lovin' me away

My love's mountin'
My love's eruptin' like a red hot volcano
Fire, oh volcano, over you
I gotta lotta lava love locked up inside me

My love's a lava bomb
Knock you in the head
Knock you in the head
Kick you in the lava bed
Over you, hot lava
Don't let your lava love turn to stone
Keep in burnin'
Keep it burnin' here at home

Oooo it's so hot
It's burnin' up in here
Oooo look out, it's about to erupt
Oooo my body's burnin' like a lava from a Mauna Loa
My heart's crackin' like a Krakatoa

Hot fire, red-hot fire
Lava, ohh, hot lava
Hot lava, red-hot lava
Hot lava, re-e-ed, hot lava
Oh hot lava

I'm gonna let it go
Let it flow like Pompeii or Herculaneum
Let it sizzle, let it rise
Don't let your lava love flow turn to stone
Keep it burnin'
Keep it burnin' here at home

I'm gonna jump in a crater
See ya later
Oooo hot lava
Oooo hot lava
Hot lava
Red hot lava
Hot lava
Red hot lava
Yeah
