SpaceShipOne takes off toward X Prize goal

As an orange sun rose over the California desert, the turbojet White Knight lifted off at 6:45 a.m. (9:45 ET) carrying SpaceShipOne on its way to compete for the $10 million Ansari X Prize.

Once they reach at altitude of about 48,000 feet, SpaceShipOne will separate from the jet and streak to the edge of space.

They've reached apogee and they're on their way down. Both craft are flying together now and the chase plane is inspecting the spacecraft.
