Democrats Use Ashcroft's Name To Motivate Voters - St. Lou Post-Dispatch
<snip>

WASHINGTON - Attorney General John Ashcroft hasn't been on the GOP presidential campaign trail, adhering to Justice Department policy to steer clear of overtly political events. But Ashcroft's name is frequently invoked in the campaign - by Democrats.

Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry drew cheers from his party's convention in Boston by vowing to "appoint an attorney general who will uphold the Constitution of the United States." During a Sept. 20 visit with comedian David Letterman, he ticked off a Top 10 list of tax proposals from President George W. Bush, including: "Attorney General Ashcroft gets to write off the entire U.S. Constitution."

Ashcroft was in The Hague, Netherlands, last week and unavailable for an interview, according to a spokesman, Mark Corallo. Corallo said his boss was bothered by the critiques but takes them into context.

"He knows that this is the silly season. He knows that this is about politics," Corallo said. "It bothers him that people would think he would violate civil liberties, because that would mean he would be violating the law - and that's just not true. But, again, you have to chalk a lot of this up to election-year rhetoric. It's unfortunate. It's irresponsible."

5. One very good reason for getting rid of Bush...
... is that all these slimy characters around him, such as Ashcroft, are gone, too.

The suggestion from his spokesman that Ashcroft's some kind of model of jurisprudence is laughable. He's spent his life as a hack politician, and he's behaved no differently as Attorney General. I used to think Ed Meese and John Mitchell were real pieces of work, until Ashcroft took the job. He makes them look like Boy Scouts.

8. The grown-ups are in charge
It's interesting that pResident Toot has to hide almost all of his cabinet from public view when the campaign rolls around.

9. lol... upset that people would insinuate he breaks the law
as opposed to pointing out when he - in front of the country - broke the law by committing perjury before the 911 panel?
