Rumsfeld Sees Retaking of Samarra as Model

NEW YORK, Oct. 4 -- Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on Monday portrayed the retaking of the Iraqi city of Samarra over the weekend by U.S. and Iraqi forces as a model for military action he said is likely to be needed to reestablish government control elsewhere in Iraq.

"What has to be done in that country is what basically was done in Samarra over the last 48 hours," he told an audience here at the Council on Foreign Relations.

With Sunni insurgents operating with virtual impunity in a number of areas in central Iraq, U.S. and Iraq officials have warned of a series of coming military offensives to restore order in advance of of national elections scheduled for January. Rumsfeld outlined a series of steps for dealing with these strongholds of resistance, starting with diplomacy, followed by threatening force and finally using force.

"That's what happened in Samarra," Rumsfeld said. "And my guess is that what you'll see in that country is the government of Iraq systematically deciding that they are not going to accept the idea of safe havens and foreign terrorists and former regime elements running around threatening and killing people."

The gunner on the Abrams Main Battle Tank is out in the
lead there maybe 10 meters between each vehicle,making up
40 meters.The tanks gunners eyes peel around
constantly looking for danger or movement.He sees long
grass to his left and a bridle of palm trees the leaves swaying
in the gentle breeze,in the distance there is a lot of rubble
from bombed buildings and open type rock ground spreadin
a couple of kilometers ending with a small ridge
outline.

tank guy will hit the lead Abrams to the left of the ambush as
the vehicles are coming from right to left this will leave the
other vehicle smack in the middle of the RPG gunners.At 2
km the laser tracking of the kornet missle system is following
the tank smak in the central line below the turret,the laser
marks the point on the viewfinder.10 seconds he shouts
down the microphone.Everyone is ready now.A deep
steadying breath by everyone.All six men are counting down
in there minds 10,9,8,7 on zero the sniper has the top gunner
of the tail bradley in his X8 scope the gunners head as large
as life,cross hairs of the middle of the soldiers kevlar helmet,
it will make no difference with an explosive tipped
sniper round,he pulls the trigger a sudden crack that is
drowned out and not heard over the vehicles engine noise.
The gunners head instantly crack back and to the right as
the round forces it through the kevlar,killing the
soldier instantly,sniper focuses on the next vehicles gunner,
he can hear the ting sound of the empty cartridge being
expelled and the new round being loaded.He moves slightly
an expert sniper and within a fraction of a second the
next gunner is in the crosshairs of the sight,trigger pulled
and blissfully unawares as his head is blown clean
off.

Many people do not seem to realise that Iraq had and has
as many as 50,000 special forces,these are all
Russian Spesnaz trained each man is highly able and
motivated in Assymetric warfare these men split into
small teams.
