Kerry Catches Up After First Debate

The two candidates are dead even in a Gallup poll taken for CNN and USA Today over the weekend. According to this survey, most voters have made up their minds, with only 1% still undecided.

In the latest Newsweek poll, also conducted after the debate, Mr. Kerry has a slight lead of only two percentage points over Mr. Bush. But 6% of voters are still undecided in this reading.

Two other recent polls taken just before the debate are more reflective of Mr. Bush's standing at the time. He was up by four points in a Los Angeles Times survey and twice that in George Washington University Battleground poll.

CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll

Bush-Cheney 49%
Kerry-Edwards 49
Nader-Camejo 1
None/Other 1

Oct. 1-3, 2004. 772 likely voters nationwide.
Margin of error +/- 4 percentage points.

Newsweek poll

Bush-Cheney 45%
Kerry-Edwards 47
Nader-Camejo 2
Other/Undecided 6

Sept. 30-Oct. 1, 2004. 1,013 registered voters nationwide.
Margin of error +/- 4 percentage points.

George Washington University Battleground poll

Bush-Cheney 52%
Kerry-Edwards 44
Nader-Camejo 1
Other/Unsure 4

Sept. 27-30, 2004. 1,000 likely voters nationwide.
Margin of error +/- 3.1 percentage points.

Los Angeles Times poll

Bush-Cheney 47%
Kerry-Edwards 43
Nader-Camejo 4
Unsure 6

Sept. 25-28, 2004. 1,531 registered voters nationwide.
Margin of error +/- 3 percentage points.
