US aims to block aviation plan
Tuesday 05 October 2004
The Bush Administration aims to oppose European Union plans to introduce an emissions based charging system for airlines, according to environmental group Friends of the Earth.
The European Commission has pledged to include aviation in the emissions trading scheme or bring in an air transport charge based on emissions in order to combat the environmental impact of the industry. However, FoE has revealed that the US plans to table a formal opposition to the plans at an International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) meeting later this week.
Friends of the Earth's aviation campaigner Richard Dyer commented; "Once again the United States is trying to scupper international efforts to combat climate change. It's now time Blair used his special relationship with George Bush to get the US to stop putting the interests of US airlines ahead of the long-term security of the planet. America must start to take its international responsibilities seriously and wake up to the threat of global warming."
