Former CIA analyst begins series of talks in Green Bay
Intelligence and the Iraq war is focus
By Anna Krejci
News-Chronicle
A former Central Intelligence Agency analyst and author, Raymond McGovern, is making four appearances in the Green Bay area to share his perspective on the Iraq war and other intelligence issues.

During a news conference before speaking to the Green Bay Rotary Club at the KI Convention Center on Monday, McGovern said the United States lacks sufficient troops and intelligence to bring peace to Iraq and a military draft is still in the picture.

He is making the speeches on behalf of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity. VIPS is comprised of 40 former employees from the CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Department of State's Bureau of Intelligence and Research, Army Intelligence, the FBI and the National Security Agency.

He called the state of Iraq a "quagmire." There is insufficient information about the enemies, their numbers and their plans, he said.

While experts call for 500,000 members of the U.S. military be stationed in Iraq, there are 137,000.

4. Ex-CIA expert encourages U.N., NATO input
Today : 7 p.m., St. Norbert College, De Pere, Fort Howard Theater in the Bemis International Center.

Wednesday: noon, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Christie Theater in the Student Union.

Thursday: 11 a.m., University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Phoenix Rooms A and B in the Student Union.

Friday: 6:30 p.m., Brown County Public Library, 515 Pine St., Green Bay. Showing of the film “Uncovered: the Truth About the Iraq War.”

With a wealth of natural resources at the Iraqis’ disposal, after a few years of international help the country could become self-sufficient, McGovern said.

“What really confounds us is no one remembers Vietnam,” McGovern said. “If we have a continuity in the policy that has been adopted … we are in trouble, deep.”

Merrill maintains the president has been reaching out to the international community and the United Nations for addition help in Iraq.

“We do have a coalition of governments that are assisting in the efforts taking place in Iraq and we’ll continue reaching out to the international community,” Merrill said. “A safe and stable and free Iraq is in the interest of the entire world.”

McGovern said the war in Iraq was launched for three reasons: Oil, security for Israel and to establish a “logistical” base in the Persian Gulf for U.S. forces.

He also said the decision to invade Iraq had been made early in the term.

“If we are willing to give up these ulterior aims … then it’s possible to talk about reducing troops and to talk about easing our way out and letting the U.N. play a constructive role.”
