Kerry Pounces on Bremer's Remarks on Iraq
By Greg Frost
TIPTON, Iowa (Reuters) - Democratic White House challenger John Kerry accused President Bush of mismanaging the war in Iraq after a former top aide said the U.S. paid the price for not deploying enough troops after last year's invasion.

Paul Bremer, the former administrator for Iraq, said in a speech this week that the U.S. intervention in Iraq was hampered early on by a lack of adequate forces and efforts to contain looting after the ouster of Saddam Hussein.

"We paid a big price for not stopping it because it established an atmosphere of lawlessness," Bremer said. "We never had enough troops on the ground."

Kerry, at a campaign stop in Iowa, seized on the remarks, stating, "There is a long list of mistakes (in Iraq) and I'm glad Paul Bremer has finally acknowledged at least two of them."

5. I'm suspicious--what's his angle?
Edited on Tue Oct-05-04 12:17 PM by rocknation
We've heard nothing of him since he abruptly high-tailed it out of Iraq. Is he trying to inoculate himself from bigger problems that he knows are on the horizon? There's a couple of billion dollars missing, for instance.

6. J. Paul Bremer
should be a little more grateful to his "corporate sponsors". Rumour has it that he walked away with $3 billion (not million) after some oil revenue fell "through the cracks".

He should probably show a little more gratitude at this point. I'm sure Bush and Dick are discussing this very issue right now.

Keep an eye on your back, L.

11. Very probable...

...that Bremer did such a thing (plus or minus a few billion). After all, Paul Bremer is widely known as "Kissinger's protege'." That in itself should explain his self serving actions.

7. I love the way Bremer is trying to back out of his comments...
It's funny that you can't tell the truth these days.

Poor guy just hung himself with the Bushies. Kerry should use this as proof that sometimes you need to speak truth to power, and that when Administration officials accidentally tell the truth they are forced to resign or recant.

Good work! Way to f*ck up Bremer. Another in the long line of almost unbelievable f*ck-ups from the administation.

16. low unemployment rate ? 4.5 my ass!
WTF? It might be 4.5% if they don't count the people that have run out of benefits? It might be 4.5% if they exclude the people that have just quit looking for work. All Bush has done is change the way people are counted. It doesn't take into account those people and the underemployed folks that used to make a living and were forced to take job where they can barely make it. BS! BUSHCO BS!
