Krispy Kreme Closing Ohio Plant

Gotta love that robust economy, huh?
If the junkfood "industry" in this country is taking a hit, you know we're in trouble.

2. can it REALLY be that?
I mean, logically it makes sense...but are there THAT many people NOT eating carbs that it would cause KK to close??

5. A lot of bakeries have taken a hit
A Butternut bread bakery here on the South Side of Chicago is closing because white bread consumption is way down.

11. several bakeries in NYC have closed.
Unfortunately I have to avoid this stuff because I have to eat a lowfat diet, try finding low fat foods when everything is low carb.

As Louis Black said on the Daily Show, so it turns out we've been eating the wrong thing - since the beginning of time!

17. Yup. And the same for wages and salaries. When they are lower you are
Edited on Tue Oct-05-04 04:24 PM by w4rma
less inclined to spend your very little excess money on coffee and a donut. If your are making half of what you were making 4 years ago or are unemplyed and living on welfare. Or are barely getting by at a minimum wage job, then you are also less inclined to grab a donut on the way to or from work.

When you're driving around and you get hungry and gas is as pricey as it is, then you are less inclined to stop by the Krispy Kreme and buy a donut and a cup of coffee and more inclined to save your money for more gas.

4. Like gang-busters
.. they have over-extended themselves with too many outlets and are now in the process of scaling themselves back. Just too many donuts are being made. And certainly being investigated by the SEC and bailing out failing franchises isn't going to help its finances much. Maybe McDonalds will buy them out?

8. And if you can buy them in Krogers, they aren't so special anymore
They aren't as fresh, either...and that degrades the image further.

29. Agreed
They've completely ceded control of how their products are handled; they can stay on the shelf for weeks in a third-party venue.

Plus, they lost some of their "mystique" by going from "legendary" (in Connecticut, anyway) to "something you can get at Shaw's".

They pulled off the biggest expansion in their history in the middle of a low-carb "craze" that I expect will be with us for a while, and while Time and People were screeching about the "obesity epidemic".

Outside of those factors, it was a great business plan. Absolutely great. :hi:

6. Unleash the Donut Revolution!
Who took the "O" out of "Ohio"?

Who's been glazing over the Ohio economy?

He's the one with the space between his ears bigger than the center of a Krispy Kreme:
GEORGE W. BUSH!

Throw the rascal out!

We just got Krispy Kreme in my little hobunk town, what's the fuss? I like my Safeway donuts better. Too bad for the employees though, that's for sure.

19. I can't eat donuts...
.... but my wife, who knows a good donut when she eats one says she really doens't like KKs at all and cannot understand what all the fuss is about.

When they branched out 2-4 years ago, all the PR buzz was about what an incredible donut they make. Looks like that was all BS.

23. digital televisions are selling like (lo-calorie) hotcakes
Edited on Tue Oct-05-04 04:55 PM by foo_bar
Top management blames its $24.4 million loss in the most recent quarter on low-carbohydrate diets such as Atkins and South Beach, which consider doughnuts the mortal enemy. These popular diets have shifted customer purchase patterns, especially in grocery stores where low-carb packaged foods are heavily promoted.

22. Oh, give it a rest!
It really scorches my britches when I see the left go one step beyond on something like this.

People are getting away from fat, empty carbs and white sugar and we blame this on Bush?

GMAFB!

What's that thing Howard Dean said about betraying ones principles in order to acheive victory?

This is one cutback we should celebrate.

Although I have to say, they are my favorite donuts. I am one of the lucky slightly underweights who can afford the carbs.

Edited on Tue Oct-05-04 04:53 PM by Ratty
I couldn't believe what my mouth was tasting! It was SOOOOOO good and so sweet and satisfying. They were the best donuts I'd ever had in my life.

The second time I had one I had to spit it out. I coulnd't believe how ultra sweet and cloying it was. Weird. Haven't had one since.

30. The most over-rated item in memory. Greesy heavy lard balls.
You have to eat them when hot, otherwise, they taste like a mouthfull of greese.

Way way way too over-rated.

People who like these must have never have tasted a really good donut.

In short, they are simply awful.
