The Associated Press

BATON ROUGE, La. Oct. 5, 2004 — A state judge Tuesday threw out a Louisiana constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage that was overwhelmingly approved by voters on Sept. 18. Judge William Morvant said the amendment was flawed as drawn up by the Legislature because it had more than one purpose banning not only same-sex marriage but also civil unions.

State courts had rejected a similar argument before the election, saying it was premature.

Some 78 percent of those voting favored the constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, and its related prohibition against state recognition of same- and opposite-sex civil unions. The vote was part of a national groundswell against gay marriage, which followed last year's Massachusetts Supreme Court recognition of gay marriage.

1. excellent news
pathetic amendment, it was a thinly veiled attempt at bigotry, and scared the Catholics in this state into falling for it.

2. Damn Activist Judges!
Its because of those damn activist judges that we got rid of slavery! That we gave women the right to vote! That we allowed people to unionize for their own safety! That we can't force everyone in this country to worship Jesus!

8. I still find it funny . . .
. . . that Bush detests Activist Judges. Yet he doesn't realize some of our greatest achievements have come from their rulings.

4. Unfortunately, this wont' stop them
The whole grounds for this suit was how this amendment should have been 4 separate amendments. Aparently it's just not very well written. If they try to pass the 4 separate amendments, expect to see them all pass with flying colors just like this one did in Sept.

5. Amendment banning gay marriages
I have never understood how so many people meddle in the private business of others.
It seems to be a diversion from their lack of anything to do, so that they look around for something to critize.
If it doesnt affect me personally, I cant think of a reason to try to tell other people how to live.

9. I saw a headline the other day
On some conservative news site that mentioned how close we are to making traditional marriage unconstitutional. They threw out that angle several times in the article without ever explaining it or back it up. It really made me mad. The implication is that heterosexual couples would no longer be able to legally marry. I hate when people twist words around like that.

10. Thank you for spelling amendment correctly
It grates on me to see the usual double-m "creative" spelling. :)

"So I don't worry about, and people shouldn't
worry about a draft. . . I think we're in good
shape, I really do. And, if not, we'll -- I'll address
the nation
. But I don't see any need to right now."
