Feds Probe Clinton Campaign Violations
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 3:37 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Republican-run Justice Department is setting its sights on Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's 2000 Senate campaign in pursuit of possible fund-raising violations. In targeting a rising star in the Democratic Party, prosecutors are trying to gain the cooperation of an indicted businessman who raised the allegations, interviews and documents indicate.

The FBI has told a U.S. magistrate in Los Angeles it has evidence the former first lady's campaign deliberately understated its fund-raising costs so it would have more money to spend on elections, and prosecutors allege one of her fund-raisers helped because he wanted a pardon from her husband.

Noel Hillman, the Justice Department's top public corruption attorney and a career official, has met three times -- most recently in May -- with lawyers for Peter Paul to discuss a plea deal. Justice wants to interview Paul to see whether he can substantiate his allegations that Clinton's campaign engaged in wrongdoing, the defense lawyers said.

The Honorable John Ashcroft

Attorney General of the United States

U.S. Department of Justice

950 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Room 5133

Washington, DC 20530

Dear Attorney General Ashcroft:

I hope this letter finds you well in these trying times.

On behalf of Judicial Watch, I am sending you under separate cover 59,535 petitions requesting you hold Bill and Hillary Clinton accountable using the evidence available to your department from Democratic donor Peter Paul. Mr. Paul, who is represented by Judicial Watch, donated over $2 million to Mrs. Clinton’s Senate campaign as part of an effort to cement a deal for post-Oval Office employment for Bill Clinton with his companies. Mr. Paul’s story has been largely confirmed by ABC News and is backed up by evidence which includes copies of checks, financial records, and candid video and photos (all of which the Justice Department, by now, has possession). Despite Mr. Paul’s cooperation which went back to the beginning of this year, rather than indict Bill and Hillary Clinton, Peter Paul was indicted on alleged stock fraud by a U.S. Attorney from Hillary Clinton’s New York. The petitioners also request that your Department work out a deal with Peter Paul so that everyone, including Bill and Hillary Clinton, is held accountable.

As you may know, we are negotiating with the staff of Mr. Michael Chertoff, Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division, about Mr. Paul, who now sits in a Brazilian prison. Mr. Paul has met with Mr. Chertoff’s staff over the course of four days and have provided evidence to them concerning not only the Clintons, but other matters as well. As a public interest organization, we believe that the public’s interest and justice’s interest will be best served if Mr. Paul is able to reach an agreement which provides him immunity in exchange for his cooperation with the Justice Department against Bill and Hillary Clinton. We trust that you take a personal interest in this case and see to it that justice is done.

Mr. Attorney General, these citizen petitioners on the Paul matter are overwhelmingly conservative and generally are supportive of much of your efforts. Yet they are requesting quick action on the still unfinished business of combating Clinton corruption. We hope you give their petitions the strong consideration they deserve.

In the meantime, we wish you and your family a peaceful and Happy Thanksgiving holiday.

Yours truly,

JUDICIAL WATCH, INC.

Larry Klayman

Chairman and General Counsel

Bush is rapidly sinking, so what better way to distract attention than to try to shift focus back on the Clintons. PATHETIC!!!

Like the Sandy Berger thing, which was a tempest in a teapot. Of course, Hillary's not running, so I'm not sure what the point is. Kerry's our nominee, not Hillary.

9. Let me get this straight
Edited on Tue Oct-05-04 03:17 PM by lancdem
An FBI agent provided an affidavit to a Los Angeles magistrate TWO YEARS AGO and this is coming out now? If they had evidence for two years why haven't there been charges brought? Give me a friggin' break. Peter Paul is a known liar.

If they had enough evidence, they would've already charged somebody. This is another Rove-engineered smear.

10. Yeah, but they won't really have much time to do that. . .
I mean, not with all of the time and money they are spending on special prosecutors investigating whether or not the current administration intentionally misled Congress in order to drag the United States into a long, costly, unjustified war.

Man, sometimes I crack myself right the fuck up.

13. A mini-October surprise
But they better have something more than this. I can't imagine this catching on at this late date, even in the unlikely event there was anything to it. Maybe the Plame outing malfeasance is nearing disclosure, so they want some "counter-scandal" to point at for diversionary purposes.

This investigation is three years old, and there's absolutely nothing new here. This can easily be smacked down as a partisan smear. The Clintons have been through this a million times.

23. All very true
Smearing Clinton is a policy that Republicans can always get behind, so when they don't have anything better, they default to this.

14. IIRC, this was what Mary Jo White, the prosecutor from the first bombing
of the world trade center, was asked to investigate after * came to power. White kept her investigators and resources trained on Hillary even after 9/11. And they concluded there was nothing there.

15. from the article: "The Republican-run Justice Department ..."
Remember when we just had a Justice Department? The Republicans look like a crime family more and more, putting enforcement ahead of the public good. Wanna prosecute someone AND do something to restore your reputation? Try Tom Delay.

19. repubes love tactical "war".. It's is a pre-emptive virtual assassination
They know that their guy is going down in flames (just like his poppy), and they soon will not have as much power, so they simply MUST start now..

If kerry is allowed to take office, Hillary will be the ultimate target. They must find enough "red meat" to keep their jackals happy for at least 4 years..

Edited on Tue Oct-05-04 03:38 PM by lancdem
Hillary can handle it. I hope Kerry can.

Edit: This is probably a foreshadowing of what the Repukes plan to throw at her when she runs for reelection. It also might be an attempt to damage her as she campaigns for Kerry.
