Haiti: 300000 homeless, death toll tops 2000
GONAIVES, Haiti - The toll of dead and missing from floods unleashed by Tropical Storm Jeanne hovered well above 2000 people, officials said yesterday, while aid workers planned further food distribution to thousands of hungry and homeless survivors.

Officials said they were still trying to determine the number of dead.

On Sunday, civil protection agency spokesman Dieufort Deslorges said hundreds more bodies had been found, raising the number from 1550 to 1970.

In Gonaives and surrounding areas alone, 1557 bodies have been recovered, and 825 people are missing and presumed dead, said Carl Murat Cantave, head of the civil protection agency in the city.

At least 233 other people in the Gonaives area were indirectly killed, due to sicknesses or injuries caused by the floods, Cantave said. Figures for other parts of the country weren't immediately available.

3. If Aristide was in power, the neo-cons would say this proves
that he is incompetent to lead. But, given the new circumstances we won't hear anything like that.

5. Dear Haiti:
Sorry.. we know we overthrew your country's president, and all. And, we know that we should take a little responsibility. But, all our money's gone to Iraq. You know, we'd just love to help out, but we're just a little short, you know. You understand.

Let freedom reign (somewhere else).
