The UT System Board of Regents has contributed more than $760,000 to this year's election, according to state and federal online records. That much money could buy 1,000 Dell desktops, and it all went to the Republican Party. Specifically, President George Bush received $20,500, according to the Federal Election Committee.
The regents gave more during this four-year election cycle than for the 2000 election, when regents chipped in a combined $150,000, with only $3,250 left to Bush.
The UT regents match a nation-wide trend. Political contributions from the education industry have increased 43 percent since 2000, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Education now ranks eighth out of 80 industries, close behind professional lobbyists.
However, UT regents and the System break the trend by supporting Republicans. The System ranks 13th in political spending, contributing 43 percent to Republicans. It's the only system in the top-20 contributors not to favor Democrats by a large margin.
