"Did Cheney break the law on 9/11?" Vanity Fair to report on Commission's
skepticism of Cheney's testimony. This came via Salon.com, who obtained an advance copy of the story to come in Vanity Fair's November issue. (I know to many people here, the thought that Cheney might have broken the law on 9/11 is putting it very mildly).

__________
<snip>
A new report in Vanity Fair magazine reveals why Bush and Cheney may have wanted to remain in firm control of their story <to the 9/11 Commission>.

In its November issue (obtained by War Room), the magazine reports that after Bush and Cheney's all but hermetically sealed session with the 9/11 Commission, some of the bipartisan investigators remained highly skeptical of the duo's testimony that Cheney cleared his order with the president on 9/11 to have U.S. fighter jets shoot down hijacked civilian aircraft.

"Some members of the 9/11 commission and its staff are convinced that Cheney acted on his own -- before receiving the president's approval -- which would mean he broke the chain of command and, by exceeding his constitutional powers, acted unlawfully," the story says. "The final report of the 9/11 commission stops just short of saying that the conversation with the president before Cheney gave the order never happened ... the report goes as far as to say 'there is no documentary evidence for this call ...' Only after Cheney twice issued a shootdown order is there clear evidence that he called Bush and received authorization to order fighter jets to shoot down hijacked aircraft."

1. But did Cheney finish "My Pet Goat?"

This is a non story only because everyone already knew it. Who seriously thinks * was in charge that day?

or something along those lines. they are a great mag.

9. Actually - Vanity Fair has been kicking ass for many, many
years. I just renewed my subscription for 2 more years - it costs just $1.83 per month. I have many young friends in their 20's and I have been giving them/hooking them on Vanity Fair for years by giving them a subscription for their birthday. They think they are so smart - keep up on fashion trends and political stuff at the same time.

Only down side is that they still let that drunk Christopher Hitchens publish articles.

High recommended.

13. The only current magazine worth paying for
Yep, even over The New Yorker

Their timing is more than impeccable, it's downright prescient.

Before any scandal or truly important news breaks, VF invariably had just published a well-written article on the very subject.

Graydon Carter should offer his services as psychic to the NY Police Department :D

18. Can't hold a candle to Harper's Magazine
If you think Vanity Fair is a great magazine, you really should read more. It's Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous with staples.

Yes, there's a bit of political content on the side--half of which comes from the right wing porker Christopher Hitchens. Graydon Carter throws a little fit now and then, but then it's promptly back to the mansion worship.

20. Agreed, the ad's are off-putting
and Christopher Hitchens is an acquired taste I have not yet been able to stomach -- but again, their timing is impeccable.

I sure will go pick up a Harpers, in fact I'll do it first thing tomorrow!
Thanks for the heads up! :)

5. I had read about this a while back
Its sort of obvious from the people present in the room on 9/11 that Cheney gave the Shoot Down orders, & then let Bush know.

Quite frankly, Bush was not able to handle 9/11; it was obvious at the time that he panicked. And Cheney took over.

14. AWOL said at the beginning he would run things like a business.
I have always figured he told the puppetmaster at the beginning that when he was away, Cheney should take over, and AWOL would back him up on his decisions. Nothing about this to change my mind.

and current investigative journalist/activist is one of those who would consider the "might have broken the law" speculation darkly humorous (see my sig line).

7. Will this become a major story or die like so many other Bush scandals?
Should Edwards mention this in the debate tonight?

10. If Edwards does mention it, it could be a haymaker
Cheney would probably just sit there and sputter for long enough to make people wonder and want to know the whole story. It could be the haymaker that wobbles Snarly McWarProfiteer enough to open the gap for Smilin' Johnny to wade on thru and start mopping up.

If tonight is half as good as last Thursday, I'll be thrilled.

8. Supports my theory...when Card leaned over and whispered, he said
just sit here...the plan is going well...Dick has it under control....we'll fly you around for awhile for the drama of it.

Meaning, we confirm you'll the front man as scheduled (while the adults execute the plan).

"Don't worry Mr. pResident, Mr. Cheney has the situation under control. You won't need to make any decisions. Just look pResidential. Oh, and have a nice day."

15. Reminds me of todays spin on Cheney in the debate
..."as the *residents surrogate."

The Chimp is Chechny's surrogate. He took over before 911, the National Command Authority and everything else.

Cheney is the prime minister and the chimp is the figurehead, a European style president (perish the thought, old Europe!).
