About 6,000 prisoners held in two Iraqi jails without trial (kids, elders)
BAGHDAD, Oct. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- About 6,000 Iraqis and other Arab nationalities were being held without trial in both Abu Ghoraib prison, west of Baghdad, and Pokka prison in Basra, 600 km south of Baghdad, local newspaper Al Mashriq reported Wednesday.

The health committee of the Iraqi National Council and the legal committee of the Iraqi Ministry of Human Rights visited the two prisons and found that all the detainees there were not tried or even charged with any allegation and most of them were arrested illegally, according to the report.

"Among the detainees are teenagers less than 14 years old as well as elders over 60," Ryadh Al Adhadh, head of the health and environment committee of the council, was quoted as saying."Fathers together with their sons were arrested and the handicapped including the blind were also imprisoned with no charge," Adhadh added.

He also noted that 56 detainees held in the two prisons were from other Arab countries, including Syria, Egypt, Libya, Sudan andIran.

Pokka prison in Basra is located in a heavily-polluted area surrounded by petrochemical and manure factories which caused diseases among the detainees, said Adhadh.

3. And learning the wonders of democracy and a free society first hand
What a wonderful experience for those poor benighted A-rabs.

(sorry, I'm having a severe sarcasm attack today. It must have been too much exposure last night to The Sneer)

4. Don't we have the highest incarceration rate in the world?
Including beacons of freedom like Russia and China?

Iraq is learning from the best.

5. No photos from Poka Prison?
Guess not or we would have had some more shock and awe.

The only reason the prison torture incidents was not on back pages of newspapers is because there were photos.

Link to congress outsourcing torture.

The School of the Americas torture manuals were recently released under the FOIA and I thought you'd be interested in that link so here it is. If you scan Documents 1 & 2 you will see that for many decades the US has been training LatAm military to do exactly what they're doing at Abu Ghraib and all the other Gitmoized prisons around the globe. Not that we didn't already know that but it's good that these were finally released.

Haven't post here in a long time. Too busy having fun on the Yahoo boards. After Kerry is elected though those boards will likely be pretty boring. Good to see your post ;-)

Peace!!

8. Only 6,000
There are millions being wrongfully held in our own country. The war on drugs has completely gutted our neighborhoods and ruined families lives.
