CBS: Uncommitteds Tab Edwards Winner
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/10/05/opinion/polls/main647648.shtml

John Edwards continued the Democratic ticket’s winning streak in Tuesday night's vice presidential debate. He was judged the winner – at least among uncommitted voters who watched the debate, just as John Kerry was last week.

Immediately after the debate, CBS News interviewed a nationally representative sample of 178 debate watchers assembled by Knowledge Networks who were "uncommitted voters" – voters who are either undecided about who to vote for or who have a preference but say they could still change their minds.

Forty-one percent of these uncommitted debate watchers said Edwards won the debate tonight. Twenty-eight percent said Cheney won. Thirty-one percent thought it was a tie.

1. Undecideds
Even being the most staunch democrat there is, I really thought it was a tie. I am glad to see though that undecideds though Edwards won. Most of us on DU forget that the undecideds are the ones we have to win over, we have already decided to vote KE.

VOTE KERRY EDWARDS!!!!

2. But the campaign can't trade swing voters for losses in the base
This is a walk down the proverbial razor's edge. If they go a little to far to win the mysterious swing vote, then the base may be alienated and not show up at the polls.

Personally, I say go for the base. I think there really is a reason why 50% of the population doesn't vote and that is because they don't feel represented.

I'd like to know how many of those non-voters are actually disaffected members of the liberal left.
