Newsview: Retooled Bush Speech Has Zingers
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - By President Bush (news - web sites)'s latest reckoning, John Kerry (news - web sites) is a failed lawmaker, a politician who would strip health care from millions, a reckless, ineffective Massachusetts tax-and-spender, and — worst of all — a wimp.

After his lackluster debate performance and a government report undercutting his rationale for invading Iraq (news - web sites), Bush rolled out a revamped campaign speech Wednesday to refocus attention on his Democratic challenger. The speech bristled with new zingers that laid out in harsh and personal terms why Bush thinks Kerry is unfit to be commander in chief.
.........
In his 48-minute address, Bush ratcheted up his rhetoric by warning that the Democrat had left a "record of weakness." Later, to emphasize the point, Bush said Kerry had a "history of weakness."
.........
During his lengthy remarks on Iraq, Bush also avoided mention of a report presented Wednesday by the top U.S. weapons inspector in Iraq, Charles Duelfer, who concluded Saddam Hussein did not vigorously pursue a program to develop weapons of mass destruction after international inspectors left Baghdad in 1998. The finding contradicted prewar statements by Bush and top administration officials.

Bush also avoided references to the rising U.S. death toll in Iraq, which stood above 1,060 Wednesday.

25. Please read this thread from earlier today
Remember, that 'speech' was promised to be 'substantive'? Well, the WH duped the 3 cable news networks, but they aired the entire 50 minutes!
We must demand equal time to Kerry!

38. It's nice to know if the Chimpster decides to all out attack Kerry
Kerry can rip the cowardly Chimp's heart out by saying when the country called for duty in Vietnam he went running to daddy to get him a safe slot in the Texas national guard while Kerry said "yes, I'll go to Vietnam". What a contrast in character.

Bush will probably do better in this debate, but I kinda think that the smears the Chimpster said today about Kerry, which he was afraid of saying to Kerry in person last thursday, is going to fire up Kerry for another good a$$ kickin of the Chimp tomorrow. No matter what is programmed into the Chimp's little mind, Kerry will work around it and trash the Jerk at the right time.

A disinfomercial if you will. Cute, not the least bit truthful, and totally worthless.

I assume this will be his talking points for the upcoming debate, irregardless of how appropriate they may be for the questions asked.

52. How about some "truthzingers?"
The Kerry campaing should be able to walk all over this new speech. Everytime Bush "zings" Kerry it should present another golden opportunity to set the record straight and give Kerry a focused chance to explain his record and actions, a chance, that he otherwise may not have had. I think it's great. Let Bush keep talking. Every time Kerry sets the record straight it's another opportunity to call Bush a liar.

If no one is knocked out we will go to the American people for the score. It would be one of the most participated elections ever.

I ask you...who's the wimp? Seems pretty clear to me....and I'd have to think it'd seem pretty clear to the average redneck as well.

7. But Bush GOVERNS like a weakling.
Only a weakling picks on someone who can't fight back, like he thought Iraq was.

Only a weakling is so fearful he sees threats everywhere instead of opportunities.

Bush destroyed our standing as the world's only superpower because he used our power the way a weak nation would......and now we are naked to our enemies.

Everyone on the planet is kicking sand in our face because they know what cringing cowards we are, because that is what our leader is.

20. Well stated aquart.
I couldn't agree more with your assessment.

Bush: Incapable by character and/or skill to do diplomacy, foreign relations on gut-based fiat. Disasterous results.

Contrast with Clinton (and Kerry/Edwards to come).....Clinton furthered US strategic and financial interests by engaging to end wars and promote peace and 3rd world development. The results are plain for anyone to see. Kerry will quickly signal his intent to continue the Clinton Doctrine and the repudiation of the Bush Doctrine should finally occur abruptly with no uncertain finality.

This guy has some serious underlying psychological issues. Inadequacy, in competition with Dad for Mom's affection, a mental illness that makes this man unpredictable and dangerous in both speech and action.

Yup. I think this is going to be the tact Bush will take. He likes to appear to be "tuff". His handlers will have him fired up and an attempt to look and sound serious. Listened to this speech today and was struck by how tacky it was and full of holes, (just my opinion). Fortunately, Kerry is no slouch and I'm sure will be ready. Should make for a good show!

The president drilled more deeply into Kerry's record than he had previously on the stump, unearthing statements the Democrat had made in his first run for the House more than three decades ago...

"Now, he's changed his mind," Bush said at a campaign rally. "But it is a window into his thinking."

If I'm not mistaken, the chimp was self-admittedly a booze hound 30 years ago. I pretty sure he hasn't copped to his heavy support of South American coca growers, but only the repugs doubt that in public. I'm thinking the windows and doors are open on bringing up his addictions now

51. hmmm...
This 'major policy speech' which was, in truth, little more than a lengthy attack ad reminds me of 1992.

Remember Poppy dropping like a stone after a poor debate performance in which he checked his watch twice - democracy is soooooo tedious! - and started flailing around with silly personal attacks on the Democratic ticket. Remember "bozos" and "Ozone Man...way out there, man!".

When the going gets tough, the Bush family whines and blames their opponents for their own many failures and shortcomings.

And remember what happened to Poppy in '92 - we're going to make the same thing happen to his odious little offspring.

62. Ummm.....Zingers....

Do you think that Bush wasn't prepared last time? Of course he was. He's just friggin' stupid. His new zingers aren't going to be any more effective than his old ones. This is a guy who can't think in complete sentences going up against a seasoned debater -- Bush is going to look just as empty-headed as he did last time. The only difference will be his pathetic attempt a delivering obviously pre-packaged soundbites.
