SANTIAGO, Chile -- The lower house of the Chilean Congress on Wednesday announced plans to investigate alleged CIA involvement in Chile in recent decades.
In a resolution, the chamber approved the formation of a committee that will try to determine whether the CIA's actions violated Chile's sovereignty.
Text of the measure mentioned a 1970s report by a U.S. Senate commission led by Frank Church, which disclosed CIA's actions including alleged efforts to block the election of Salvador Allende, a Marxist elected president in 1970 and toppled three years later in a bloody military coup led by Gen. Augusto Pinochet.
"It does not seem reasonable that while the government and the Senate of the United States have conducted several investigations that have disclosed the action of agencies such as the CIA in our territory for years, Chile's National Congress has never dedicated enough time to learn and evaluate these facts in our life and history," the resolution said.
