Charges Dropped In Antiwar March
Charges Dropped In Antiwar March
Associated Press
Thursday, October 7, 2004; Page A02

NEW YORK, Oct. 6 -- Charges against 227 antiwar protesters who were arrested during the Republican National Convention were dismissed by a Manhattan Criminal Court judge Wednesday at the request of the district attorney's office.

The charges of disorderly conduct and parading without a permit were dropped after the judge was told that the march, sponsored by the War Resisters League, was nonviolent and resulted in neither personal nor property damage.

1. The SOBs achieved their goal -- no need to pursue it further, right?
Guess we should be grateful for small favors, but somehow I'm not -- since the goal of the RNC and their corporatist bedfellows was the obscenity of shutting down free speech, freedom of association, and plain just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. A collateral goal would be to strike fear into the hearts of all those who might be thinking of public protest in the future.

For the moment, that would appear to be enough for the brown shirts in three-piece suits.

2. They were gotten out of the way
when needed and that was the point of the arrests, not that any harm was done or law broken ---is obvious from this story.

3. were any wrongful arrest lawsuits filed?
I'm not sure, but I think this group of protesters were given conflicting info by the cops on the scene at the beginning of the "walk".
