Limbaugh livid after court OKs data grab
Radio rabble-rouser Rush Limbaugh raged yesterday after a panel of Florida judges ruled prosecutors probing illegal drug abuse were in the right when they seized his medical records.

"I want to remind everybody: I have not been charged with anything," Limbaugh lamented on his radio show after the ruling. "This was a fishing expedition from the outset to see if there was anything they could find to charge me with."
........
Limbaugh, 53, vowed to appeal and said the court's ruling "does not mean that the state attorney's office can now immediately dig into those medical records."

Prosecutors went after Limbaugh's medical history after learning he bought about 2,000 painkillers - prescribed by four doctors during a five-month period - from a pharmacy near his Palm Beach mansion.
..........
"Search warrants have generally not required prior notice because of the understandable fear that the property's custodian might cause the evidence to disappear," the judges wrote.

Martha Stewart went to jail for a lot less. I'd give anything thing to see Limbaugh escorted out of his mansion in handcuffs.

93. Not "livid" - "scared!"
He knows he could be facing jail for his drug activities. Is there just one doc out there who will step forward. If they all step forward that will nail him. They certainly are not guilty of anything because how would they know Rush was getting prescriptions filled elsewhere? Of course, that is assuming that they were actually "treating" Rush for a medical reason and not just writing prescriptions.

67. Humility
Edited on Thu Oct-07-04 03:12 PM by DesertedRose
has a way of ensuring that, if you don't learn the lesson the first time (drug rehab), there are other opportunities for "lessons" (jail) along the way.

Rush is no different from the rest of us in that regard. If he made an effort to learn the nature of humility, the road would go much smoother for him.

On Edit: I hope Sean Hannity is paying VERY close attention. He's not exempt from humility's lessons either.

- He broke the law...big time. He's obviously not a legitimate chronic pain patient...but a drug addict looking for a 'fix'.

- Rush is still being treated with kid gloves. If he were POOR or a minority his ass would already be in jail.

83. Tolerance.
I remember one time, after surgery (septorhinoplasty), I got myself up to seven 7mg Percocets at once. Followed by another 4 about 2 hours later. I know I polished off a bottle of 90 in about a week, followed by a refill of 60 in a matter of days.

I don't think my liver was too happy with me ;) (Percocet contains the same opiate, oxcodone, as Oxycontin; it also contains Tylenol, however).

My liver is fine though, so don't worry...yet.

90. 3 Oxycontin a day would keep most pretty
happy all day long. 13 is a little over the top, I think.

I know of a guy that has spent 15 years in a Texas prison for a questionable drug sale. I know Texas is ruff, but give me a break!! As for Rush he'll probably beat the rap but it'll cost him a ton of money. And that is the thing he loves more than anything in the world, well besides drugs.

91. I couldn't imagine either...
I was a "vic-head" Vicodin abuser..and started to take pills when I had chronic pain....(then when the pain would come back worse after I stopped...and then my PSYCHIC pain got bad......I would just keep taking them...I got them often for chronic pain issues....) anyhow...plain and simple...I used when I could have done without....so...even in my WORSE abusing times...I could only take 4 to 6 a day...and I am paying BIG TIME now...(I have been off them since 1997...) with a destroyed stomach and intestines.......and now pain killers work poorly when I REALLY need them (after surgery for example) SO I think Rush was either a BIG time abuser...or he was helping out his user friends....happens ALL the time among some women cliques ("oh...I have some extra Percocets...I'll give ya one..")

again, I reiterate that Rush, by being the hypocrite supreme about "Zero Tolerance" will get what is coming to him....

85. damn!! that's a lot of drugs.....
Norco is a hydrocodone/acetaminophen; clonidine is an anti-hypertensive that's been useful in treating narcotics withdrawal symptoms. The last one is kadian which is sustained release morphine sulfate.

In case anyone was wondering...I googled them, hadn't heard of most of them; I've only had the hydrocodone/acet for broken leg. Personally I hated them; they made me itchy and bad indigestion, but did work for pain.

24. Sounds like he's still on drugs, if he's that irrational.
He didn't seem to mind encouraging investigators to gather evidence on Clinton when Clinton wasn't charged with anything.

And besides, cops don't need to charge you before collecting evidence to decide whether to charge you. That's why they have search warrants in the first place. As long as there is reasonable suspicion-- and the facts that there is sworn testimony that he's a drug addict and that he checked into rehab to cure himself is pretty good reason to suspect-- they can search.

He's just trying to play the victim and turn the cops into the bad guys. That's his style. Create innuendo, run quickly from the facts.

Hope all Freepers are paying attention. This is the type of person their hypocrisy breeds.

36. Ohhhhh Good Point
Are there any "upper scale" prisons for drug addicted users who break the law? Certainly this won't be considered a "white collar" crime. He needs to go to the Big House - and see if he comes out alive.

He is rumored to be a homosexual, so perhaps the gang rapes won't bother him as much.

64. Interesting
I see Clonidine a couple of times, that is sometimes used for addicts with withdrawel symtoms. Hmmm and Kadian? Another long acting narcotic which seems to be what he likes. Nope, I mean I never doubted but this list is NOT an example of controlled pain management. Hope he goes to prison. They have good NA meetings in there.

86. I may be wrong, but...
IIRC, clonodine is a drug for hypertension; by relaxing the blood vessels, the plasma absorption rate of oxcodone (Oxycontine) therefore increases. Could be wrong though. Could be the combined relaxant effects of both drugs. Could be an alkaline vs. acid interaction.

Lotsa ways to "bump up" a drug's dosage (by dosage, I mean a) how much actually enters the bloodstream vs. taking the expressway to the liver/kidneys; b) keeping the drug in the bloodstream longer; or c) taking multiple medications w/ some overlapping properties). Example: Calcium Carbonate; Tums; will increase the absorption of amphetamines taken by mouth. Actually, it's true of pretty much any alkaline substance.

80. Ooooo SHIT! These data do NOT look good for Rushboy!
Edited on Thu Oct-07-04 05:04 PM by dirk
If this data is accurate, then Rush is toast. In general, there is no reason to be getting the same drug from different physicians. It's not unusual to be treated for different conditions by different doctors, but any doctor would ask you if you're getting prescriptions from other physicians. Unless Rush has four distinct conditions he was being treated for, why would he be seeing four doctors? The only exception would be if one doctor was filling in for another, say on the weekends or after hours.

Now, skip down to June 30th: he gets 100 Norco from Dr. Deziel (Norco is a brand name for a combiantion of hydrocodone, a very addictive controlled drug, and acetaminophen, a.k.a. Tylenol); then eight days later her gets another 88 Norco from Dr. Drourr. That's more than 12 10mg Norco consumed per day--I'm betting that's way above the recommended dose. Now 30 days later on 8/6 he's getting 40 hydrocodone with acetaminophen (basically the same as Norco) from yet a third doctor, Dr. de la Cruz. And then the real kicker is, just five days later, over a period of just 18 days, Dr. Deziel gives him 433 more Norco tablets--that's a consumption of more than 24 pills a day! I'd say Dr. Deziel is going to be in big trouble too, but it will be virtually impossible for Limbaugh to make a defense against that. What can he say, he didn't consume them all? Then why was he getting so many? It's not like people with his money have to horde this stuff. An alternative explanation is that he was giving or trading the pills to a third party for an unknown reason--which is, itself, a federal felony.

No worries, you arrogant buffoon. You will be. Soon.

Fishing expedition my ass. That's how these kinds of investigations are conducted. You interview the doctors involved and you look at their records. They're looking for conflicting statements given to the docs by Rushboy; and those statements tend to jump out at you. This is exactly what I used to do for a living for the state Dept. of Health. Once you have those records in hand, it's pretty damn easy to spot a doctor shopper. Rush's career will be over, and shortly.

60. Someone please explain: I just signed an HIPAA form that allows cops
to look at my medical records without a warrant. The ACLU says that
Health Insurance Portability and Accounting Act of 1996 (HIPAA)allows the police to do this.

65. Florida has laws against "doctor shopping"
http://www.myflorida.com/myflorida/government/governorinitiatives/drugcontrol/pills.html

excerpt:

The focus on prescription-drug abuse also has been heightened by an ongoing investigation in Florida into the actions of conservative talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh, who admitted in early October that he was addicted to painkillers.

Limbaugh stepped forward a week after media reports surfaced that his former housekeeper and her husband had supplied him with OxyContin and other powerful prescription drugs.

Authorities are looking into whether Limbaugh violated Florida's "doctor-shopping" law by getting multiple physicians to write him overlapping narcotic-drug prescriptions and failing to tell them about one another.

Bush also has a personal stake in the issue. His 26-year-old daughter, Noelle, earlier this year completed a 16-month program through an Orange County drug court. She was arrested last year at a Tallahassee pharmacy after posing as a doctor to call in a phony prescription for Xanax, an antianxiety medication.

73. Overlapping scripts is the key here. FYI on the law for those who...
...may not understand it.

When Limbaugh's legal problems first emerged, I noticed many people didn't understand what the term "doctor shopping" meant. I'm posting this to clear up any further confusion before it arises.

It's perfectly legal to get consultations with 10 doctors in order to get one who will prescribe you what you need (or think you need).

It isn't legal, at least in Florida, to go to 10 different doctors to collect 10 prescriptions for the same drug.

For example, I'm prescribed clonazepam (Klonopin)...50 (not really, just a nice round number to use as an example) 2mg tabs per month. If my doctor ceased to prescribe me clonazepam, I'de be well within my rights to go to as many doctors as necessary to find one who would fill me out a script for said medication.

I'de be breaking the law, however, if I went to 20 other doctors and got each of them to write me out a script for 50 tabs of Klonopin, picking up 1000 pills a month.

Just an FYI for anyone who may be confused at to what is and is not legal.

that the guy with the loud mouth about locking drug addicts up and throwing away the key just might get that karmic debt paid.....funny how when it's HE that is the addict...that suddenly it's unconstitutional to seize records....I have known young Vicodin addicts (24-26 year old women who got hooked on them from chronic pain issues) spend a YEAR in jail for the first offense of "doctor shopping"....and this in 1994...so.....I think pigboy will get what's coming to him...hypocrite....

Nada. Zip. Zero.

He needs more help than just a drub rehab program, IMO. I did listen to his first show when he came back from rehab. He seemed to have actually acquired compassion...but it was short lived.

Now, he's right (no pun intended) back to his opportunistic, egomaniacal, self-centered, bombastic, polemic style. And getting paid for it to boot! It's sad that people can be so easily snookered and will get behind him.

As far as I'm concerned, Rush Limbaugh is a pimple that needs to get popped.
