AP Poll: Kerry Holds Small Lead Over Bush
WASHINGTON - Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) holds a slim lead over President Bush (news - web sites), according to an Associated Press poll that shows the Democrat gaining ground while Bush lost support on personal qualities, the war in Iraq (news - web sites) and national security.

Fewer voters than a month ago believe Bush is the best man to protect the country and fight the war.

The AP-Ipsos Public Affairs poll, completed on the eve of the second presidential debate, charted a reversal from a month ago, when the Republican incumbent had the momentum and a minuscule lead. Since then, bloodshed increased in Iraq, Kerry sharpened his attacks and Bush stumbled in their initial debate.

Nearly three-fourths of likely voters said they had watched or listened to the first presidential debate last week, according to the poll. Only 8 percent came away with a more favorable view of Bush while 39 percent said they felt better about Kerry.

Among 944 likely voters, the Democratic ticket of Kerry and Sen. John Edwards (news - web sites) led Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) 50 percent to 46 percent. The Oct. 4-6 survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

1. Bush bumps his head on good ol' 46% again.
His ceiling is too low, even for such a shitty little man as himself.

12. Wonder why they don't mention prior poll was 52-45 Bush?
"Bush has a 7-point lead over Sen. John Kerry - 52 percent to 45 percent among likely voters - in the AP-Ipsos survey less than six weeks before the Nov. 2 election. Independent Ralph Nader was backed by 1 percent."

"In the 2000 presidential election, three in 10 voters said they made up their minds in the last month, including one in 10 who did so in the final three days, according to exit polls. The undecided group is believed to be smaller this year.

With time running out, Kerry has much important work to do in his campaign, the AP-Ipsos poll suggested.

Bush holds a 17-point lead among men. And Bush and Kerry are tied among women, a traditionally Democratic group that now favors Bush on protecting the country."

34. That is F^^^ng rediculous. How can Bush hold a 17 point lead
among men and be tied with women when he is losing 50-46?

Such utter nonsense.

10. This could be a watershed
This is the first poll in months that shows Kerry with a lead outside the margin of error.

And he's at 50 percent, which is a very good sign.

Great work Kerry. I'm so glad you're proving equal to our trust in you!!!!

21. Yup yup yup...
I'm still surprised, though, that we didn't get one on the day the 1,000th US soldier was killed. I guess since 60 others followed so quickly, they figured it wasn't worth the effort.

22. Ram It Home!
This weekend, volunteer a few hours to phone bank or canvass for Kerry. Our guy is keeping up his end of the bargain by taking the fight to the Bush Evil Empire. We've got to help out. If you haven't been active in the campaign yet, now is the time to start.

We've got them on the run, so let's keep them running!

25. Rate this article a "5".
Here's a "kick" to keep this thread up. It's an AP poll which has notoriously been trying to convince everyone that Bush is way up in the polls, but now the realization is hitting them, too, that Kerry is ahead. Let's keep up this momentum and hope tomorrow night Kerry kicks Bush's ass some more.

26. That's like the ninth poll out of ten...
to put Kerry above (or "tied with") Bushy. Given that Bush has no ability to say anything witty or imaginative, I'd say he's reached the maximum support he can get. What's it mean? Bush loses.

27. Nice To Be Ahead, But This Is No Democratic Election
Not really one-man/one-vote, I mean. I'm mainly watching the numbers in the swing states. Looks good there, also. Plenty of time to move it further toward Kerry.

I am a bit worried, since the historic trend is for people to move back to the incumbent at the later stages of this sort of Presidential election.

Still optimistic!

Big turnout would make me breath easy (as well as make these polls pretty useless.) Wouldn't that be sweet?

AND, there needs to be a lot of exit polling this election, so that it will make it obvious if the Repugs take this election away this time. They will attempt to steal it. We need to make sure that the exit poll numbers say otherwise.
