National GOP group cancels $1 million in Nethercutt ads

By Jim Brunner and Alex Fryer
Seattle Times staff reporters

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has canceled more than $1 million worth of Seattle-area television advertising scheduled on behalf of U.S. Senate candidate George Nethercutt in the weeks leading up to the Nov. 2 election.

Advertising representatives at Seattle network affiliates KING, KIRO and KOMO confirmed that the committee this week canceled all the time it had reserved for ads between next week and Election Day.

Dan Allen, NRSC spokesman, said, "it doesn't mean we can't do it in the future. We're assessing on a daily basis the entire playing field. We know he is a running a very aggressive campaign."

The committee had reserved about $865,000 worth of advertising at KING and $300,000 at KOMO. An advertising representative at KIRO confirmed the ads on that station also had been canceled but did not provide a total dollar amount yesterday afternoon.

3. Too bad.
Of course this Nethercutt dude couldn't win. But it's fine for them to waste their money there instead of elsewhere. I hope the NRSC spends on Keyes too.

4. Murray is trouncing Nethercutt, and the Osama ad didn't help him
Murray's counter-ad made mincemeat of him. I'm waiting for her to drag out the infamous Iraq war quote:

"The story of what we've done in the postwar period is remarkable. ... It is a better and more important story than losing a couple of soldiers every day."

5. My guess is that...
...their internal polling says forget it, either that, or fundraising has slowed dramatically due to weewee's bad performance last week and the bad news out of Iraq, and they are strapped. It would not surprise me if they start scooping up all the cash they've pledged to places that are unlikely to produce results. They'll divert the cash to winnable yet close races and use some for ad buys to prop up weecowboy's miserable record.

If you ever run for office, spend your money as fast as you can. Obligate it so you can't get it back. Otherwise, your national committee, when they give, can also taketh away!

6. Patty Murray is great at
answering the slander he has put out so far.

Everything he has put up - she has bat down.
Gregoire is doing well with that too.
