Kenyan Environmentalist Claims Nobel Peace Prize
NAIROBI, Kenya (Reuters) - Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai said Friday she had been told by a Norwegian diplomat that she had won the Nobel Peace Prize.

"I've just heard from the ambassador of Norway three minutes ago that I have won," Maathai, Kenya's assistant environment minister, told Reuters. "I am very excited. I really don't know what to say."

The prize is due to be announced by the Nobel Committee in Oslo at 9 a.m. GMT.

4. A very courageous decision by the Nobel Committee
Choosing an African woman who've worked both for democracy, human rights, and the environment, is very courageous in these times. Some politicians have already criticized them for not adressing the problems of nuclear proliferation etc, which are "more important."

Wangari Maathai is the leader for a movement that has planted 30 million trees in Kenya; a green wall against the desertification of the country. She's also part of the Kenyan government, the first democratic government after Daniel arap Moi, and she was one of those fighting against Moi.

10. Read about it earlier..
.. and saw the discussion on BBC World (don't you just love fridays off), and they were talking more about why the IAEA leader didn't get it, than why Maathai recieved it.

But way to go - hopefully, it will give her project some much needed attention.
