If Florida "had" to have those hurricanes, it's damn lucky that they happened so near the election.. Gee, I wonder if the 90% "rule" will be in play when the next big earthquake hits CA...or when tornadoes "visit" Illinois.. http://www.heraldtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20041008/NEWS/410080320/1060FEMA's help rises to 90%
Local agencies will get more help for storm repairs -- $13M in Charlotte.
By KIM HACKETT
PORT CHARLOTTE -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency will cover 90 percent of the cost of cleanup and damage repair for local government agencies across the state.
President Bush signed an executive order Thursday increasing FEMA's assistance, thereby saving
Charlotte County about $13 million. The agency typically covers 75 percent of costs not covered by insurance.
Bush's executive order is critical for Florida, a key state in next month's presidential election. The state has been battered by four hurricanes and some counties have sustained damage from as many as three of those storms, devastating many local budgets.
Faced with millions in rebuilding costs, Charlotte County officials were happy to hear more federal relief is on the way. "That's fantastic," said Willard Beck, Punta Gorda city manager, who had not heard of the increase. "That will save us a big chunk of change."
Beck said the city has not tallied all of its costs yet, but they've spent several million so far.

While the
increase in federal coverage won't help individual homeowners, FEMA did extend the deadline for individuals to apply for federal assistance. Generally, hurricane victims have 60 days to apply for help, meaning Charley victims had until next week to get their paperwork in. FEMA has given those victims until Dec. 11 to file their paperwork.
