Supreme court: Nader can appear on ballot (Maine)

PORTLAND — The state's highest court on Friday upheld the secretary of state's decision to allow Ralph Nader on Maine's presidential ballot, rejecting a last-ditch appeal by the Maine Democratic Party.

The unanimous decision by the Maine Supreme Judicial Court came 48 hours after justices heard arguments on the appeal by state Democratic Party Chairwoman Dorothy Melanson. The decision apparently puts to an end a weeks-long effort by the Democratic Party to keep Nader off the ballot.

Gore won it in 2000 with a ~5 margin to Chimp*, but Nader took 6% of the votes. Not good for Kerry if Nader takes the same amount (which I doubt he will) in november.

If Nader was off the ballot, they would just stay home or vote for some other crank candidate. Oh, and of course, after they help to swing the election to Bush they will claim that they still have the moral authority to criticize him for 4 more years.
