Bush: I'll Protect U.S. From Terrorists

ST. LOUIS - On the road and on the airwaves, President Bush is trying to paint this year's presidential race as a black-and-white decision for voters.


Bush says he has led the nation with "principle and resolve," while his Democratic opponent, Sen. John Kerry, is "proposing policies and doctrines that would weaken American and make the world more dangerous."


In his weekly radio address, aired Saturday amid planned campaign events in Missouri, Iowa and Minnesota, Bush argued he will better protect the nation by aggressively pursuing terrorists.


"We removed terror regimes in Afghanistan and Iraq , and now both nations are on the path to democracy," he said. "We shut down a black-market supplier of deadly weapons technology, and convinced Libya to give up its weapons of mass destruction programs. And more than three-quarters of al-Qaeda's key members and associates have been detained or killed."


Bush said Kerry, meanwhile, is in favor of a policy that would "paralyze America by subjecting our national security decisions to a global test."

In his radio message, Bush also noted that Charles Duelfer, chief U.S. weapons inspector, said this week that scientists and senior members of Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s regime believed the former Iraqi leader would resume work on weapons of mass destruction once international sanctions were lifted. "Instead, because our coalition acted, Iraq is free, America is safer and the world will be more peaceful," Bush said.

Kerry has rejected that argument, saying Duelfer's report rebuts the administration's key rationale for the war: that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction, which have not been found.

On the domestic side, Bush credited his tax cuts with economic growth, but the job market remains slower than expected. Payrolls grew by just 96,000 in September in a weaker-than-expected report Friday by the Labor Department (news - web sites). That means the president faces re-election with 821,000 fewer jobs than when he took office, though 1.78 million jobs have been added in the past year.

A Kerry campaign statement dismissed Bush's remarks, saying: "It sounds like the president was wearing a pair of rose-colored glasses when he recorded this speech."
