Kerry Stumps for Black Voters at Churches
Edited on Sun Oct-10-04 05:15 PM by party_line
this is written by Nedra Pickler but there are some great quotes...
snip>
"We have an unfinished march in this nation," Kerry said at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, as many congregants waved fans handed out by the campaign with his slogan, "Hope is on the way."
........
Jackson told worshippers their political concerns are issues that touch their everyday lives, not gay marriage.

"I see disturbing signs today that some of our churches have been confused by wolves in sheep's clothing," Jackson said. "How did someone else put their agenda in the front of the line?"

"November 2, the power is in your hands, hands that once picked cotton," Jackson said.

Added Sharpton: "Everything we have fought for, marched for, gone to jail for — some died for — could be reversed if the wrong people are put on the Supreme Court."

Speakers avoided criticizing President Bush (news - web sites) by name, since they were in church, but he was indirectly vilified.

Former Rep. Carrie Meek said Kerry is "fighting against liars and demons. ... He challenges the man who walks with a jaunty step." She rocked her hips in an imitation of Bush's swagger as the congregation cheered and Kerry laughed from his high-backed seat behind the pulpit.

More from this nedra-free rendition:

snip>
Sharpton, Kerry's former rival for the Democratic nomination warned President George W. Bush (news - web sites): "On November 2 we are going to the polls for the big payback," he said, to loud cheers from the congregation.

Jackson also hit out at what he said was a new wave of efforts to deprive African-Americans of the right to vote.

"In 2000 our franchise was taken from us," Jackson claimed. "We were targeted, today it is getting worse. It is not just Florida, it's Minnesota, it's Colorado, it's Illinois. It's an ideology, it's a plan.

"While they brag upon elections on Afghanistan (news - web sites), we cannot have one meeting to discuss open, free and fair elections at home."

Urging African-Americans to come out en masse against Bush in the election, Jackson said: "The power is in your hands, hands that once picked cotton, on November 2 can pick a president."

is another debacle like Florida this year...will the Democrats fight harder for those black votes or will it be more of the same as shown in Fahrenheit 9/11?

I do hope the Dems have learned and will FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT for all votes this year!

Will a Senator stand up for those who are denied their RIGHT to vote?

3. He says "never again..."
snip>
"Never again will a million African Americans be denied the right to exercise their vote in the United States of America," Kerry promised, referring to the disputed Florida recount in the 2000 presidential race. As he often does before black audiences, Kerry said he has a legal team that will aggressively respond to any allegations of disenfranchisement.

4. I hope so because even though I am
not black, EVERY time I see the scene of one black representative after another almost begging ONE senator to sign their petition with no response...my blood boils.

Not ONE senator (Kerry, Edwards, Lieberman, Gore, etc) stood with the black representatives. As I have said on another thread, that is to our collective shame.

5. in bringing this up
I just wonder if you know what would have happened if they (not counting Gore who wasn't a senator) had backed the petition.

Nothing. If the Senate had decertified the election, the Republican House would have elected the Pres. The black caucus making their case at the certification WAS the protest, there was no need to keep fighting a lost battle.

Blaming Dems for the disenfranchisment is like blaming the doctor for the cancer. They may not of done everything right, but they sure as hell didn't cause the illness.

6. That's a good point, but it still would have been nice for ONE senator
to sign a petition.
