Hamdi's wait for release now two weeks

NORFOLK, Va. An American citizen held as an enemy combatant for almost three years remains in a South Carolina Navy brig as negotiations for his release continue between the United States and officials with the Saudi Arabian government.

Yaser Esam Hamdi has been waiting for two weeks to be released.

Officials tell the Virginian-Pilot newspaper in Norfolk that if the 24-year-old is not released by Tuesday, a judge in Norfolk will order that he be brought to court.

Hamdi's release hit a snag when the Saudi government objected to a requirement that it monitor Hamdi for five years. The Saudis have said they have no evidence that Hamdi did anything illegal. <snip>
