Kerry effort feels shorted by N.J. (democratic) party

Gov. McGreevey controls about $2.5 million but has freed $25,000. Low voter turnout is a campaign fear.
By Tom Turcol
Inquirer Staff Writer

Despite repeated pleas from the campaign of Sen. John Kerry, Gov. McGreevey has refused to release more than a token amount of state Democratic money for voter-turnout efforts on behalf of the party's presidential ticket in New Jersey.

With control over an estimated $2.5 million in state party funds, McGreevey has agreed to release only $25,000 to the Kerry campaign - infuriating New Jersey surrogates of Kerry and of his running mate, Sen. John Edwards.

The money shortage has severely undercut the Democrats' planned grassroots effort this fall and could impair their ability to get voters to the polls Nov. 2 in a must-win state for Kerry.

Already, just three weeks before the election, it has resulted in a notable absence throughout the state of lawn signs, bumper stickers, phone banks, and other traditional signs of an active campaign. And with little money to hire people, the Kerry campaign has had to rely almost exclusively on volunteers.

2. I wrote him
and pasted the news link and first part of story and asked him if he was trying to position himself as the next Zell Miller or maybe this was an oversight.

4. The classic way to run to lose.
Withhold funding. The interesting question here is are they trying
to make sure Kerry loses NJ, or just trying to make sure it stays
close so he has no coattails?

6. Kerry enjoyed a comfortable two-digit lead in N.J.
in the polls earlier this year. Now N.J. is being
reported as "too close to call."

Did McGreevey make a deal with the devil to keep
more revelations about him under wraps?

It's hard not to don my :tinfoilhat: when I read
inexplicable things like this.

5. If nothing else, we could pool some resources to get lawn signs
buttons and bumper stickers sent to their HQ. How 'bout it?

7. Well, in all fairness

Were it not for Bush's terrible performance in the first debate, Kerry would be in big trouble. The Clinton people have made a postive difference in what has mostly been a lackluster campaign.

Although it is important to defeat W
1) there are many other races that could use financial help from the party
2) after the NJ governor leaves amid controversy, funds may be required to keep the NJ Demo. Party in control.

9. Kerry in the Whitehouse would be worth more than the millions
in McCreevey coffers at this time.

10. It's time for Corzine to open up a can of whup-ass
The only reason disaster-in-chief McGreevey is still governor of New Jersey is because Corzine didn't demand his immediate resignation. Corzine did him a big favor in allowing McGreevey to salvage what little dignity he has left -- and it's time for McGreevey to return the favor.

11. What a Crock!
Regarding the lack of lawn signs, etc. cited in the article. I live in Union County in New Jersey and see plenty of Kerry/Edwards lawn signs and bumper stickers. There are also plenty of Steve Brozak signs. He is the democratic challenger to the sleazy, Mike Ferguson in the 7th congressional district of New Jersey. It was reported recently that Ferguson's permanent residence is in Maryland!

I am happy to report that I see VERY FEW Bush/Cheney signs even though Union County tends to be more Repukelican.

12. glad it's ok in Union but
I'm in Essex and I don't see enough signs. I knew there had to be a reason because this is a Democratic stronghold.

I don't understand why Gov. McGreevey is doing this. I'm guessing he'll correct it if the pressure is on.
