Detained al-Qaida suspects have ‘disappeared,’ human rights group says

October 11, 2004, 8:00 PM EDT

At least 11 al-Qaida suspects have "disappeared" in U.S. custody, and some may have been tortured, Human Rights Watch said in a report issued Monday.

The prisoners are probably being held outside the United States without access to the Red Cross or any oversight of their treatment, the human rights group said. In some cases, the United States will not even acknowledge the prisoners are in custody.

The report said the prisoners include the alleged architect of the Sept. 11 attacks, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, as well as Abu Zubaydah, who is believed to be a close aide to Osama bin Laden.

In refusing to disclose the prisoners' whereabouts or acknowledge the detentions, Human Rights Watch said, the U.S. government has violated international law, international treaties and the Geneva Convention. The group called on the government to bring all the prisoners "under the protection of the law." <snip>

2. "All told, more than 3,000 suspected terrorists have been arrested in ...
... many countries. Many others have met a different fate. Let's put it this way -- they are no longer a problem to the United States and our friends and allies."

2003 State of the Union address

Bush was smirkingly suggesting something along the lines of what you say ...

I remember when he said this, one of the few times I forced myself to watch him. this was during the run up to Iraq and I was furious over his actions. Biggest War Protests in the history of the earth and he blows them off as "focus groups!" He was gloating to the world over his assasinations of people suspected of terrorism in Afganistan. they were taken out by a smart bomb when they were driving somewhere. Judge jury and executioner.

Kill them all and let God sort it out?

Wonder how many other executions he's authorized that he doesn't brag about during the SOTU address?

5. Like * say
Brining the terrorists to justice, or justice to the terrorists.

Given this administration's poor record on getting its facts straight, am I the only person who's uncomfortable with the CIA running around popping people in the back of the head?

Hell, and Bush has been bragging about it since the 2002 State of the Union Address.

7. Kick
I am going to kick this. I can't post a thread yet as I don't have enough posts (Just made a login to get this up). But this is an important story. Often Russian TV reports info that is not available in the US.

9. From Amerika
Thanks!
It was on RTVi which has Russian news broadcast via satallite.
I wonder how many replies I have to make before I can post a topic. Someone may be able to shed more light on this story. My spouse (who is russian) said that Russian news reported that he has reportedly been hiding out in the triangle just to the east of Pakistan that is Islamic part of China. Which might explain why it has been so hard to find him.
We often get details about Afganistan and such that are not covered by the media here. There could be something to it.

11. Are we going to close down the Guantanamo concentration camp?
Are we going to stop the illegal detentions and the rampant violations of international law that Bush/Cheney have committed for nearly 4 years?

This is an issue that we must fight once Bush is done away with in November. We must impose the rule of law on American foreign policy. This is quite a challenge in that many will agree that invading Iraq was wrong, but many more do not see that invading Grenada and Panama was also equally wrong.

12. Grrr...
How long until people here are 'disappeared' too? I'm glad they used the term disappeared, the connection to the disappeared in South American countries must be emphasized. Disappearing people is not something the US should ever be doing, not even to "enemy combatants."

13. The "mastermind of 9/11" is getting the incommunicado treatment....
I wonder why? Wouldn't this be a great talking point for the BUsh administration on how "effective" they are on the "War on Terror"?

Maybe because it's not Khalid Shaikh Mohammed? Check out Paul Thompson's writing on this subject at www.cooperative research.org

15. They either haven't got him, or
they don't like what he'd say in open court.

The US has preferred to see accused 9/11 conspirators go free in Germany than to allow Khalid to give testimony.

The man was an ISI asset. And the ISI is a CIA asset.
