Former CIA Director to Discuss Role of Telecommunications in National Security

Former Central Intelligence Agency Director George J. Tenet will discuss at TELECOM '04 his experiences dealing with national security challenges and the role played by the telecommunications industry.

Tenet, who was sworn in as the 18th director of the CIA on July 11, 1997, served under President Clinton and President Bush before resigning this summer.

"As we have increasingly seen, telecommunications service providers are a critical part of the infrastructure that ensures the safety and security of the nation. George Tenet has seen first hand the important role the telecom industry plays in connecting the country and we are honored that he will share his thoughts with us at TELECOM '04," says USTA President and CEO Walter B. McCormick Jr.

Prior to his appointment as CIA Director, Tenet served as deputy director of central intelligence. Tenet came to the CIA from the National Security Council, where he was special assistant to the president and senior director for intelligence programs. He developed and coordinated policies on various aspects of intelligence and espionage from collection priorities to covert action.

Before joining the National Security Council, Tenet was a member of President Clinton's national security transition team, responsible for an assessment of the intelligence community.
