Israeli gunfire hits schoolgirl

United Nations officials say an 11-year-old Palestinian schoolgirl was shot in the stomach and critically wounded by Israeli gunfire as she sat inside a UN school in a Gaza refugee camp.

A spokesman for the UN refugee agency (UNRWA) in Gaza City said the pupil had been wounded inside the school run by the international organisation.

"She was inside the classroom, sitting at her desk," Paul McCann said.

"We have repeatedly called on the Israeli army to control the fire of their soldiers in the vicinity of schools," he said.
