American Indians hear Heinz Kerry

Teresa Heinz Kerry promised representatives of 562 Native American nations that her husband will improve their lives. But a Republican response claims President Bush has already done so.

By ROBERTO SANTIAGO

Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife of presidential hopeful John Kerry, did some political pinch-hitting for her husband on Monday when she addressed the 61st annual convention of the National Congress of American Indians at the Broward County Convention Center.

The First Lady contender received loud applause for a speech that told the few hundred in attendance precisely what a Kerry-Edwards ticket would do for Native Americans.
(snip)

Among the key promises, Kerry said tribal sovereignty would be defended and ''the doors of White House would be reopened,'' by appointing Native Americans to key positions. Money would be allocated to provide quality and affordable healthcare to Native Americans.

An office in the Department of Energy would be created to help tribes develop alternative forms of energy, like solar and wind power ``so that no American child will ever have to die for a need for oil.''

10. Saw a neat sign on the res today
In San Juan Pueblo in northern New Mexico. It was a hand made sign in front of one of the adobe houses, said: "Vote Kerry. He tells the truth."

Isn't it amazing how indigenous people get right to the heart of the matter? No bs, no spin, just the simple truth.

13. Most of audience left when time for the Republican came
"Most of the audience left when it came time for the Republican response from U.S. Rep. J.D. Hayworth of Arizona."

more kickbacks, and thugs and diverted waters,
and promises that might as well be drafted in sand

If the Indians are willing to give Kerry and his team a shot, let's hope that they can follow through with their promises for the Indians.

We should not forget.

Columbus Day: Celebrating a holocaust.

When Columbus first sighted land on Oct. 12, 1492, the American Indian Holocaust began. The Spanish were driven by their lust for gold and silver and the English fueled by their desire for property. Christians killed with zeal those they believed defiled with sin. Spain needed labor and set up missions in order to convert Natives. The English, however, did not bother. Their goal was exterminating the Indian race.
.....

The Commission on Human Rights of the Organization of American States observed that 40,000 people simply ''disappeared'' in Guatemala during the 15 years preceding 1986. Another 100,000 were openly murdered.

''That is the equivalent, in the United States, of more than 4 million people slaughtered or removed under official government decree - a figure that is almost six times the number of American battle deaths in the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War combined.''

Almost all the dead and disappeared were Indians, direct descendants of the Mayas. Still today, indigenous in the Americas are tortured and slaughtered, their homes and villages bombed, while more than two-thirds of their rain forest homelands have been intentionally burned and scraped into ruin.

16. An American holocaust......
Just curious if American Jews find the Indian people 'kindred spirits' in the sense that they/we have both suffered such needless hardship, suffering, and murder on an ENOURMOUS scale?

Is what is good for one 'nation' good for the 'other'? In terms of retribution?
