WASHINGTON A reality check for reality T-V.
Federal regulators have proposed a record indecency fine of nearly one-point-two (m) million dollars against Fox Broadcasting for an episode of its reality series "Married by America."
The Federal Communications Commission cited the network for the April Seventh, 2003, program. It included scenes from Las Vegas bachelor and bachelorette parties featuring strippers and various sexual situations.
Following that broadcast, the commission received 159 complaints alleging the episode contained indecent material.
After an investigation, the F-C-C decided to impose a seven- thousand-dollar fine against each of the 169 Fox T-V stations that aired the program. Fox has 30 days to appeal.
The F-C-C has stepped up enforcement of the statute in recent years. Critics, notably radio host Howard Stern, claim the F-C-C is seeking to stifle free speech.
