Roy Moore says Supreme Court cases don't address God
10/12/2004, 5:35 p.m. CT

By PHILLIP RAWLS

The Associated Press

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Ousted Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore said Tuesday he's glad the U.S. Supreme Court decided to review Ten Commandments cases from Kentucky and Texas, but he said they don't get at the core issue: the acknowledgment of God.

snip......

"The difference between those cases and my case is the acknowledgment of a sovereign God. It's that simple," Moore said at a news conference.

snip......

Moore said the justices turned his case away "because they put themselves above the law and above God."

snip....

"If you secularized it enough, if you reduced it to history enough to deny the sovereignty of God, it's OK," Moore said.

snip.......

Moore said he doesn't like the Montgomery displays because he said they relegate the Ten Commandments to history and do "not recognize a sovereign God."

12. God is all-merciful and all-loving, and, unlike most of us here
seems to tolerate fools pretty well.

4. In the United States, God isn't sovereign. The people are.
"Judge" Moore should read the Constitution sometime.

5. That's the very soul of the First Amendment and the heart of our system
It's not a question of giving any particular religion preference over others, it's a question of acknowledging the concept in any official voice. That's because it's anti-democratic: when you make an official policy of an assumption of the cosmos, you make all who don't share it nothing more than serfs.

An idea is an idea, and it has to stand on its own feet; to claim that one idea is above question, beyond proof and "good", is to dismiss all who don't subscribe to that idea as inferiors.

Not only does Roy Moore not "get it", he REALLY doesn't get it: that secularization is the spine of our country, and it was done very much on purpose by the founders.

8. Reckon this guy ever read the new testament?
"Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, and render unto God that which is God's"

If that isn't an argument for the separation of church and state, I don't know what is.

9. Roy ought to study that Commandment about not ...
... using the name in vain. Using the name to get attention and to develop a political base probably qualifies as vain usage.

10. Lalala, *hugging the Constitution*
I'm a very tolerent person, but this kind of religious crap just gives me the creeps.

If I believe a papaya is sovereign, can I expect the Supreme Court to follow suit? If I gathered enough followers? Just curious.

11. aww, poor baby
jeez, you'd think the guy would at least show some thanks for the court changing its mind and hearing his case.
that is, before the 1980 decision is repeated. stare decisis is very powerful on this court, especially with O'Connor.
