Blix claims US failed to control nuclear sites

13 October 2004 07:26

The former UN chief weapons inspector, Hans Blix, has said the United States failed to control suspected nuclear sites in Iraq after last year's invasion, allowing crucial equipment to disappear.

His comments came after the International Atomic Energy Agency expressed concern at the loss.

Dr Blix said it was scandalous for the United States to lose control of the situation after the end of the war.

Dr Blix's comments were echoed by the former senior American weapons inspector, David Kay.

He said it was inexcusable that the US had insufficient troops on the ground to prevent widespread looting after the first phase of military operations ended.

2. cnn is mentioning this on headline news
... but has yet to post it on their website. It will be shocking if this is not brought up in the debate, since Kerry has mentioned that nothing but the oil was guarded during and after our attack.

Iraq nuclear losses 'a scandal'

The US admits its forces lost control of security after Saddam fell
Former UN chief weapons inspector Hans Blix has said the loss of control of Iraq's nuclear sites by the US after it occupied the country was scandalous.
His comments were echoed by former senior US weapons inspector David Kay.

They were speaking after the UN nuclear inspectorate said items had disappeared from the sites which could have been used in nuclear programmes.

But Mr Kay said the loss was not in itself dangerous, as such materials were freely available outside Iraq.

Satellite imagery showed that entire buildings had been dismantled, said the International Atomic Energy Agency.
