Amendment summaries to stand (Wyo. constitution)

By BILL LUCKETT
Star-Tribune capital bureau Wednesday, October 13, 2004

CHEYENNE -- People voting on the four proposed amendments to the Wyoming Constitution next month will get summaries of the changes on their ballots but won't see the actual language of the changes, thanks to a state Supreme Court ruling.

The high court, without comment, on Tuesday rejected a request by four state citizens to either order that voters be presented with the exact text of the proposed amendments or to remove them from the ballot.

Wyoming Secretary of State Joe Meyer, the defendant in the lawsuit, and Attorney General Pat Crank, who defended Meyer, praised the court decision in a joint statement and thanked the court for ruling quickly. The lawsuit was filed Sept. 28.

"The voters of Wyoming can now express their views on the four important questions put to them by action of the Wyoming Legislature," Meyer and Crank said.

Meyer did not have much to add in an interview Tuesday afternoon.

"I'm just glad that it's over and we can discuss the issues," he said. "I compliment the attorney general's office for throwing three people into the fray on this. When I asked for a quick determination, he really performed well, and I appreciate that."

Plaintiffs' attorney Tim Newcomb, however, lamented the Supreme Court decision.

"What a sad day for Wyoming people and the Wyoming Constitution," he said. "Changes to the Wyoming Constitution should not be convenient for the government."

(snip)

Tort reform to "fix" doctors' malpractice insurance. :wtf:
