2. He says those things in private. Read some more private quotes, here.
You’re Invited to the War Party (“Bush at War” book review)
By Georgie Anne Geyer

Ever since his Watergate revelations, which helped evict a president and change the United States for all time, for better or worse Bob Woodward has stood as the major force in a new genre of journalism. He talks, wheedles, and, using government officials’ personal ambitions and dreams of political eternity, implicitly threatens his way into the often closed corridors of power—there, he is a master at getting a certain number of figures who try their best to remain aloof and unknown to tell their stories. The proposition, understood if not explicitly spoken, is that this book, as his former ones, will tell the story—you miss out on leave on this journalistic port, fellow, you miss the whole historic ship!

First of all, Bush at War is really about the decision-making process in the upper levels of the Bush administration—the White House, the State Department, and the Pentagon—from the exact morning of Sept. 11th. It begins with a profoundly worried George Tenet, head of the CIA and, from all of the space he gets in the book, obviously one of Woodward’s best and favored sources. That very morning, Tenet is wondering about when Osama bin Laden, whom he has been desperately tracking, will strike the U.S. Then “it” happens—and from then onward, the book delineates day-by-day, and sometimes hour-by-hour and minute-by-minute—what supposedly went on in meeting after meeting. From all accounts that I know of, Woodward’s interpretations are exactly right; it is the quotes that are so bothersome.

Another time, he says to Woodward, “I’m the commander—see, I don’t need to explain—I do not need to explain why I say things. That’s the interesting thing about being the president. Maybe somebody needs to explain to me why they say something, but I don’t feel like I owe anybody an explanation.”

At still another point after the Afghan war has started, the president says to his staff, “Look, our strategy is to create chaos, to create a vacuum.” And Woodward ends the book with another quote from the president, in which he again reflects the obsessive chaos theory of the neoconservatives surrounding him like sentinels and for whom Iraq has become the sina quo non of political existence: “We will export death and violence to the four corners of the earth in defense of our great nation.” Whew.

28. FACT CHECK ALERT: That last quote wasn't bush.
I remember having to check the source of that quote with my own eyes, and FWIW, you can't hang bush on that "export death" quote.

It's some CIA operative or some such.

31. I just now looked it up on your tip and I'm going to actually have to look
at the book itself. I found one source saying that Woodward said Bush said this at his governor's mansion in 1999. I found another source saying that it was one of 25 men (who was speaking for the group) attending a religious prayer meeting on February 5, 2002. The 25 men consisted of 3 Special Forces units and a CIA paramilitary team. The source was, maybe, leading a pledge (prayer?) for the group.

What about him attacking Al Hunt in a public place in front of his family and screaming and swearing at him. What about him mocking Karla Fay Tucker with pursed lips, "please don't kill me"... he's more protected from public view now but it sounds like him.

8. That's Bush. He's a nasty bastard!
Ask anyone close to him. It's been widely reported that he goes off on people with a string of filthy language, regularly. Ask (who was it?) Al Hunt? from WSJ about Bush verbally abusing his family at dinner one night, after the WSJ printed something negative about Bush's father (who was then either a candidate or president).

Bush has a vile temper, and he's OBVIOUSLY taken this as a grudge match.. you could see him doing his cockwalk at the debate. He looked like he was going to punch Kerry.

Bush is an asshole. Have we all figured that out now?

Something about having a foot on mankind's neck forever? I can't remember the exact words, but there's something like that in 1984.

Ol' georgie fits the totalitarian profile well.

appearing saintly in public living on barley bread,
afterwards he will suddenly become a tyrant
putting his foot on the throats of the greatest men.

23. Hi! Welcome! I just read your entire saga on the knightshift.
Wow. You're a really good writer. It's easy to tell, even when you are recounting things that were rather emotional at the time.

I actually remember your name on Free Republic! I was never a freeper, but occassionally, I'd check it out to see what was the outrage du jour over there.. and I remember Darth Sidious from back then.

I have zero reason to doubtyour story, nor the phone call you received about that incident. It all goes with what I've read here and there about Bush's temper and ego, and paranoia. He makes Nixon look well-balanced.

I'm sorry that you don't feel you can vote for Kerry because of your abortion beliefs. I do think that his answer in the last debate truly gives pause to people who feel the way you do. I respect your views, but it's not right for others to impose their own beliefs on their fellow citizens. And.. I think of it this way: If Bush gets re-selected, then we can be sure of more and more killings in the middle east, of already born children, and unborn children and their mothers. Pro-life should include ALL life. Kerry is our only hope.

But I seem to remember him as Darth Sidius on Free Republic. There was a pretty big stink when he was tossed out, IIRC. Anyway, glad I found it because he's a pretty interesting THINKER, and because it gave me an excuse to finally register on DU :)

36. Any way to give Knight's blog post an entire thread?
That's the first thing I tried to do when I signed up this afternoon but the system wouldn't let me. I don't have enough seniority yet but considering how other boards get trolled it's a good system.

I wrote him an e-mail earlier tonight. In it I encouraged him to vote for John Kerry because it would be a legit way to spite Bush after what was done to him. He wrote back and said that although he's so pro-life that it disqualified Kerry from readily getting his vote, he _did_ say that he'd only started learning about Kerry in the past few weeks and admitted that "Kerry is a VERY brilliant and articulate thinker. Since I don't consider myself to be either conservative or liberal, I can admit that I respect him... and VERY much so... for his depth of mind without any fear of reprisal."

I also told him that I'd posted his blog address on DU. He said that he hadn't looked in on this site for over two years but "I might have to peek in on Democratic Underground sometime now, if my stuff is getting around. It surely can't be worse than when I peek into Free Republic: people there today were CHEERING that Bush threatened to crush Kerry's throat. That's disgraceful and it's NOT Christian!" He said I could post some of his comments here too. I just found his whole story to be really incredible and wanted to help him see it take off :)
