Bush edges Kerry as Halloween costume
Edited on Wed Oct-13-04 04:29 PM by RedEarth
SEATTLE, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- More Halloween revelers would rather trick-or-treat dressed as President George Bush than as Democratic challenger John Kerry, an online survey says.

More than 25 percent (25.43) of respondents to a survey conducted by Savers Inc., an international thrift store chain, said they'd most like to wear a Bush costume this Halloween. A Kerry costume came in second place with 22.74 percent, followed by late president Ronald Reagan with 24.69 percent and Bill Clinton with 22.98 percent.

Twenty-seven percent of respondents said they would opt for a famous character, while 25 percent preferred fright-themed costumes and 15 percent occupation or social-themed costumes, such as a girl scout or plumber.

Twelve percent of the respondents favored fantasy-based characters, such as witches, vampires and pirates, while historic and non-human creations received 12 percent and 8 percent of the votes, in that order.

Costumes of fictional pop characters such as Shrek, Harry Potter and Spiderman are already best-sellers.

3. How can Kerry be in second?
Last time I checked, Reagan's 24.69 is larger than Kerry's 22.74.

Fuzzy math, I suppose.

didn't even show a Kerry mask so maybe some retailers are only selling shrub and not Kerry.

12. "relevant" in that the candidate who has the better selling mask
has invariably won the election.

19. that could be
I just read it in an article in the last week or two, so my memory could be off. I don't buy it anyway; Bush masks are selling better because he is a) Scarier and b)more ridiculous looking. There is a lot more to work with and a lot more fun to be had with a Bush mask. He's practically a cartoon character anyway, so there are a great many possibilities to work with. I do a pretty good imitation of his voice already, and with a mask it could be devastating, but my wife would throw me out of the house.

21. I wonder if Bush will make it into the same category as Nixon?
Edited on Wed Oct-13-04 07:43 PM by Lisa
That is -- not a "celebrity" anymore, or even an historical character, but as the timeless symbol of something scary. Particularly if he gets another term. I wondered about this when I saw a college kid (too young to remember the Nixon era) wearing a Tricky Dick mask, a few years back. Apparently retailers still do a brisk trade in Nixon getups at Halloween. This would fit your theory, about Bush being much more amusing to lampoon. Just as Nixon is more sinister than other Presidents, with his dark jowls and shifty eyes.

Actually, Bush went to a party in one during his "irresponsible" phase (prior to age 40). That would be my definition of "from the frying pan into the fire" -- the guy in the Nixon mask turns out to be George W. Bush.

re: Halloween disguises -- I think you should go for it this year. If things work out as planned, there may never be a better time to do it (as Bush is discarded in the garbage can of history). If you want to get your wife onside, do a little (in-character) grovelling and whining -- if your impression is as good as you say, my guess is that she'll laugh herself sick.

The Halloween masks are not the only thing edging out Kerry. Look at the latest polls:

Zogby (Bush 48, Kerry 44):

Rasmussen (Bush 49, Kerry 45):

30. I dressed up as Reagan for years
...because I got huge laughs bumbling around as our 40th President. I would spill drinks, forget peoples names, call all the women "mommy" and generally demean the man. It was definitely NOT complimentary.

If I can find a good mask, I'll go out for Halloween as Bush and carry a bottle of Jack Daniels and a draft notice.
