Kerry wants to appear on 'O'Reilly Factor'
Associated Press
Published on: 10/13/04

NEW YORK — After John Kerry pronounced himself a fan of Bill O'Reilly, the Fox News Channel host is hoping that will translate into a pre-election interview.

"I like Bill O'Reilly," the Democratic presidential candidate told TV Guide. "I think he does a terrific job. I think he's got a very good show."

Kerry said he'd "love to" appear on "The O'Reilly Factor" and would ask his schedulers about it.

O'Reilly, who interviewed President Bush for telecasts last week on the top-rated cable news program, told The Associated Press he'd been trying for about two months to book Kerry. (Kerry said he was unaware of any invitation.)

I don't have Fox News here, but I did in FL and I know what a jerk he is.

Ok, Rush is going down, O'Reilly is going down. How about Hannity and Savage?

I forgot: And Neal Boortz?

53. To the contrary, my guess is that
JFK is just baiting O'Lielly. If O'Lielly swallows the bait, JFK could publicly announce his rejection of the invitation pending resolution of the sexual harassment lawsuit against O'Lielly. That should raise some hackles. It would be like telling O'Lielly to "SHUT UP!".

You've got to be fucking KIDDING me. Kerry can't be this stupid.

What "terrific job" does he do, John? Lying? Distorting the truth by taking things (like your own speeches) out of context? Intimidating people he disagrees with?

Bad call on Kerry's part, methinks.

O'Reilly Hopes for Interview With Kerry

Thu Oct 07, 3:56 PM ET

After John Kerry pronounced himself a fan of Bill O'Reilly, the Fox News Channel host is hoping that will translate into a pre-election interview.

"I like Bill O'Reilly," the Democratic presidential candidate told TV Guide. "I think he does a terrific job. I think he's got a very good show."

Kerry said he'd "love to" appear on "The O'Reilly Factor" and would ask his schedulers about it...."

It's the exact -- and I mean the exact same story, word for word. The only thing that has changed is the headline. Now why would AP decide all of a sudden to repost this story, which was barely newsworthy to begin with? I mean it's a quote from an old TV guide, for pete's sake.

And why, I wonder, would they change the headline from "O'Reilly Hopes for Interview With Kerry" to "Kerry wants to appear on 'O'Reilly Factor'"? It couldn't have anything to do with O'Reilly being slapped with a sexual harassment suit and AP wanting to smear Kerry by association, no matter how tenuous, could it? Nah, that can't be it. Guess it's just a mystery for the ages.

14. This is dumb... what else could Kerry say?
"I hate O'Reilly. I think he's a jerk."? Anyone who wishes Kerry would have said that doesn't have a political clue. Somebody obviously asked Kerry about O'Reilly. He didn't offer this opinion up out of the clear blue. Do you want Kerry to look like he's afraid to go on O'Reilly's show? Of course, O'Reilly's going to have trouble finding anyone to go on his show now, so it's a moot point anyway.

18. seriously, how could it hurt?
No swing voters watch him, the worst he could do is possibly give O'Liely a little fodder for the George Jr. campaign. Best case scenario, he could look good in front of some Republicans who don't like George Jr, but will likely vote for him anyway.

I say go for it.

21. It's totally believeable.
In fact it's normal and expected. The person who asked Kerry that question was trying to trap him. This is the exact reaction from Dems they were hoping for, but Kerry was at a catch22 no matter what he said.

And I agree with Ducks in A Row. This is an old story. I remember the first time it was posted. I don't even think it made much of a splash on DU. AP decided to rehash it now that these allegations have come out against O'Reilly. AP is disgusting sometimes.

23. Kerry will need to do the interview in the studio
If it happens. According to something I read (I think it was in slate, could've been in salon), Bill's a lot more cordial to people in the studio. Less chance of yelling and Kerry's mike getting cut off.

Let's see what happens with the debate. If it's another blatant rage-filled, jaw-clenching, angry debacle (that would be the participant not named John Kerry), he should go and ask, "How did you bury Howard Dean and stand by accepting this specific irate behavior?"

just my $.02...

28. Maybe It Would Be OK
O'Reilly claims to be unhappy w/Bush over the situation in Iraq.
He is also moderate on social issues.

The problem is, O'Reilly doesn't like a lot of blathering, and Kerry isn't very good at expressing himself in thirty second sound bites. But, if Kerry did go on th O'Reilly factor it would show he had guts. And if O'Reilly did go off on a rant, Kerry could just stand (or sit) there looking at him with that same expression of calm bemusement we saw during the debates. Then, when O'Reilly stopped, Kerry could just say, "did you have anything else...Good, Okay, now I can answer your question....Oh, I thought you were done. Go ahead....finished now? thank you."

If he brings up Iraq and the "flip flopping" charge, the "sometimes I'm wrong when I talk about it" would fly well with the O'Reilly crowd (IMO)

34. I don't doubt Kerry said it.
If there's bias it may be in the fact that the interviewer asked a catch-22 question in the first place. But Kerry chose the lesser evil. He could hardly have bashed O'Reilly, especially after O'Reilly had made a great show of saying he didn't agree with the SBVFT. Kerry showed class. This is a non-story being pushed by people with an anti-Kerry agenda. And this is completely typical of the stories Freddie Stubbs posts all the time. Let it drop.

It was early this year when many considered Kerry on the ropes and out of the running. O'Reilly actually gave him time to speak and was, as I recall, surprisingly civil. So Kerry has been on the show in the past, FWIW.

BTW, Howdy, folks. :hi:

40. thanks for the welcome, Downtown Hound.
I've been a lurker on this great site for a while. A daily read for me now. :) I came out of lurk mode to note that Kerry "braved" the O'Reilly spin zone before and did quite nicely. Not "hiding under his desk" as O'Reilly says of those who don't appear.

Of course, after reading the lawsuit, I don't want to think about what O'Reilly's been hiding under his desk. Whooo. :scared:

43. What if this harassment lawsuit is sponsored by the republicans?
I firmly believe that Kerry going on O'Reily will give Kerry legitimacy with O'Reily's Fox base. They will see Kerry for what he is, instead of the French, flip-flopper Fox portrays him as. This could really hurt Bush, in my opinion, and would make Kerry look like he has balls to go on the most conservative of networks and survive. I smell a rat here. Kerry on O'Reily could only help Kerry. I suspect that O'Reily is trying to rid himself od the partisan image that surrounds him. He is constantly trying to prove he is not biased. I think O'Reily's ego is getting in the way of the Republicans' agenda.
