WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of people filing an initial claim for U.S. jobless aid rose more than expected to 352,000 last week, a government report showed on Thursday.

Initial jobless claims rose 15,000 from an upwardly revised 337,000 in the prior week, the Labor Department (news - web sites) said. Economists forecast a climb to 340,000 from the originally reported 335,000 in the week ended Oct. 2.

The closely watched four-week moving average of claims, which irons out week-to-week volatility, rose for the fifth straight week, climbing to 353,000 in the week ended Oct. 9 from an upwardly revised 349,000 in the previous week.

The moving average was at its highest since 355,500 in the week ended Feb. 28. <snip>

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Oct. 9, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 352,000, an increase of 15,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 337,000. The 4-week moving average was 353,000, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week's revised average of 349,000.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending Oct. 2, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.3 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Oct. 2 was 2,845,000, a decrease of 11,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,856,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,861,250, a decrease of 5,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,866,250.


UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 336,528 in the week ending Oct. 9, an increase of 57,113 from the previous week. There were 368,876 initial claims in the comparable week in 2003.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent during the week ending Oct.2, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,353,221, a decrease of 14,675 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.3 percent and the volume was 2,943,805.<snip>

6. Yes, all of those IT workers should just go back
to community college! What an incredible statement. Bush is so out of touch, he actually thinks that more education is the answer to all of the unemployment woes.

4. Well, these people just better get their asses...
...off to the local junior college to enroll in some job training so they can get one of those high skilled, high paying jobs that a good junior college education will get them. (end of sarcasm)
