Pro-Aristide Priest Detained in Haiti

Associated Press

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti - Police in Haiti detained a priest on suspicion of links to violence, while ex-soldiers who carried out a bloody revolt against President Jean-Bertrand Aristide said reinforcements were headed for the capital to help put down clashes that have killed at least 48 people.

The priest, Rev. Gerard Jean-Juste, was detained at his church Wednesday on suspicion of organizing meetings with pro-Aristide gang leaders during two weeks of gunbattles and beheadings, Justice Minister Bernard Gousse said.

"We had links between him and the perpetrators of the barbaric acts," Gousse said. "He was sheltering these people, organizing meetings in his home with gang leaders."

Aristide supporters armed with guns and machetes later rampaged in the Delmas neighborhood where the arrest occurred, threatening people, Gousse said. No injuries were reported.

Armed ex-soldiers plan to stop Haiti violence

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Former soldiers who ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in a revolt said Wednesday that reinforcements are advancing on Haiti's capital to stop violence that has killed at least 46 people.
The reported movement of these forces threatens conflict with armed Aristide loyalists who remain in Port-Au-Prince and United Nations peacekeepers deployed after Aristide was ousted in February.

The country already has been roiled by two weeks of gunbattles and beheadings. The new conflict broke out after Tropical Storm Jeanne devastated the island, leaving up to 3,000 people dead.

In the storm-ravaged city of Gonaives, in northwest Haiti, Red Cross officers suspended operations after a French Red Cross truck was held up at gunpoint Tuesday and looted of cooking and hygiene supplies, said the society's Haiti mission director, Marie-Helene Meaux. She said Red Cross workers from several countries had stopped work in the city.

1. Psst. It's called fascism. When the Nazis got into power they threw all...
...labor leaders in jail.

That's what you do when your only goal is to keep wages low and concentrate wealth in the hands of a few people already at the top. You throw people in jail who are trying to organize the people.
