Curtains Ordered for Media Coverage of Returning Coffins

Since the end of the Vietnam War, presidents have worried that their military actions would lose support once the public glimpsed the remains of U.S. soldiers arriving at air bases in flag-draped caskets.

To this problem, the Bush administration has found a simple solution: It has ended the public dissemination of such images by banning news coverage and photography of dead soldiers' homecomings on all military bases.

In March, on the eve of the Iraq war, a directive arrived from the Pentagon at U.S. military bases. "There will be no arrival ceremonies for, or media coverage of, deceased military personnel returning to or departing from Ramstein airbase or Dover base, to include interim stops," the Defense Department said, referring to the major ports for the returning remains.

5. This failed policy

The Failure of the Bush Domino Theory in the Middle East

Democracy can’t be forced on an entire nation at gunpoint. The Bush domino theory of freedom spreading like a virus is a failure—cold war theory applied to a completely different kind of enemy. It’s made the world a more dangerous place—heightening tension, creating new breeding grounds for terrorists, increasing hatred toward the U.S. and isolating us from the world when we most need cooperation and support. Despite the Bush/Cheney spin, Iraq remains a disaster. We toppled Saddam Hussein, but we’re mired in a dead-end war that’s accomplished little. What will it cost to continue this failed policy for four more years? How many more American lives lost and dollars wasted?

The Promise of John Kerry’s Approach to the War on Terror Just as a block with neighborhood watch is stronger than a single household standing against crime, an alliance focused on common goals is more powerful against common enemies. As the leaders of a broad coalition, we can destroy terrorist cells while reducing their ability to finance and carry out attacks. We can foster regional stability, reduce our risk abroad and increase our safety at home. We know that’s a completely realistic expectation—we experienced unprecedented international cooperation after 9/11. We need a leader who can rekindle that spirit of collaboration. John Kerry’s plan offers hope and promise in a cohesive policy based on international cooperation, shared risk and shared expense.

On Nov. 2, We Have a Clear Choice: John Kerry, John Edwards and a Democratic Congress.

3. The Green Zone blasts today.....were those civilians killed?
Haven't seen many details.

Our only hope out of this quagmire is Kerry. It'll be extremely difficult to make ice cream out of this horseshit that Bush has created, but something has to change. Something has to give.

7. Baghdad Blasts in Fortified Zone Kill 8 Civilians
http://quote.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000087&sid=a1zLdBZ8I.8g&refer=top_world_news

Oct. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Eight civilians were killed and at least three were hurt in two explosions in Baghdad's fortified international zone, which houses government offices and foreign missions, the U.S. military said.

One of the blasts shortly before 1 p.m. local time killed six people and wounded three at a bazaar in the central area, Lieutenant Colonel James Hutton, a U.S. military spokesman, said by telephone from the Iraqi capital. The area, also known as the Green Zone, was hit by a second explosion at an indoor cafe, killing two people and injuring a ``number'' of others, he said.

The attacks involved at least one suicide bomber, Agence France-Presse said, citing the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. Hutton said he didn't know the nationalities of the casualties in the blasts. Reuters, citing the military, said two of the dead were Americans and that it wasn't clear whether they were military or civilian.

The interim administration of Prime Minister Ayad Allawi is struggling to stop bombings and shootings across Iraq as the nation prepares for elections in January. Allawi has said he won't let terrorism derail the electoral process.

8. 2 Americans Killed in the Green Zone....
don't know if they were contractors, soldiers or civilians and we may never know. This was a huge black eye for the "coalition".

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Two Americans were among eight people killed in two bomb blasts in Baghdad's Green Zone on Thursday, the U.S. military said, after one of the bloodiest attacks on the highly-protected compound.
"We don't know if they were military or civilian," a spokeswoman said.

The two were among six people killed at a busy bazaar selling souvenirs inside the compound, which houses Iraqi government offices and the U.S. and British embassies on the west bank of the Tigris river.

Another two civilians were killed in a separate blast at a popular cafe nearby. The blasts occurred about five minutes apart, just before 1 p.m. The nationalities of the other victims are not yet known, the spokeswoman said.

Did you know there are 10,000 Iraqis living there? That makes for a lot of potential resistance fighters.
