Iraqis Fear More Violence in Muslim Fasting Month
By Mariam Karouny
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The Muslim holy month of Ramadan is supposed to be a time of spiritual joy, but the most that Iraqis can pray for this time is that it brings a moment of peace.
"No matter how optimistic you try to be about having a peaceful Ramadan, everything that's going on suggests the opposite. This country is out of control," said 32-year-old teacher Diaa Salem.
Relentless suicide bombings, shootings and kidnappings have left Iraqis fearful that the holy month, which starts on Friday, will be bloody.
National Security Adviser Kassem Daoud warned Iraqis in an eve of Ramadan news conference of a possible increase in terrorist activity, and said the government was taking extra precautions.

"Families will be scared to go out at dusk after fasting. We also think the number of people attending prayers will be reduced this year because of security fears," said Mohammed al Faidhi of the Muslim Clerics Association.
...
"We are afraid the Americans may make this month a month of blood and we want it to be a month of peace to pray and fast," he said.
