Foreign Scientists shun US... Helps other countries |
|
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 09:18 AM by Skinner
Article from "Neue Zuricher Zeitung
Swiss research boosted by reverse brain drain ---------------------------------------------- Top European academics are increasingly turning their backs on the United States and returning to Europe as their discontentment grows with the policies of President Bush.
The Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) recently made two such appointments - but opinion is divided over whether this is the start of a trend.
“As much as it pains me, I must – out of selfish reasons – welcome Bush’s re-election,” said Olaf Kübler, president of the ETH.
Kübler was referring to the fact that Europe seems to benefiting from a reverse brain drain, as its top scientists return to the continent after time spent in the US.

1. In every way measurable... |

These klowns are horrible for this country. Where we are on the scale of international perception is incredibly frightening.

4. I think the main point, for Switzerland at least... |
|
is not that the researchers are fleeing the USA, but they've been encouraged to come back in the recent years in contrast with the previous policy that encouraged the researchers to study overseas but didn't encourage them to come back. I know several scholars that leaved for the USA hoping to come back after some years, but Switzerland didn't want them back, now things have changed. If you add this to the political situation, this situation is understandable.

Lets say the situation for a researcher trying to get funded in the US is now as bad as in Europe.. so they can as well come back home.
But it's not only the "coming back" but rather the "not going in the first place" that is remarkable. Friend of mine is a genius in molecular biology and was INVITED to go to the Florida University. But after seeing all the intruding visa questions he declined, being very aware of data protection.
Most questions on US visa forms are viewed illegal or discrminating under European law.

5. Free World Scientists have always turned away from Totalitarian States |
|
Be it Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, or Imperial Amerika.
I don't blame them. It is disturbing and grotesque for someone from a Freee Country to subject themselves to Totalitarianism.
I don't blame these scientists at all. They have an alternative, to shun Totalitarianism and turn their efforts towards Free Countries that respect them and are morally superior to Totalitarian Nations like Imperial Amerika.
Nope. I don't blame these scietists at all for shunning an nation grotesquely shunning reason and rushing towards Medeval Fundamnetalism.
Not a bit of blame. I would do the same if I was a Citizen of a Free Country.
But I am not.
I am a Citizen of Impeial Amerika.

6. I personally know three scientists/profs |
|
who used to regularly come to the U.S. to do research as part of a group here. They will no longer come to the U.S., and their decision is solely based upon the fact that Bush and his crew are in control and have done the things they've done.
These scientists think that the United States is no longer the country they once respected.
If this trend continues, American scholars will want to leave, as well, especially if Bush, in a second term, continues to create a deficit that trickles down to states and impacts the funding they receive for education.
Of course, the Bush base won't care because they have an anti-intellectual mindset, typified by their opposition to teaching evolution rather than religion in science classes.

Sound like we're accomplishing a similar goal....reducing the number of people able to think our way out of our predicament.

I heard an NPR piece a few weeks ago about conservative complaints that Universities were "dominated" by liberal professors, and they want a "balance." For balance, read "conservative domination," just like conservatives took over the broadcast media by complaining about a liberal bias and demanding "balance."
Can you imagine if a political ideology test is applied to professors in science and engineering? There goes U.S. leadership in science!
