Police in riot gear fire on crowd with balls loaded with pepper

By JEFF BARNARD
The Associated Press

JACKSONVILLE, Ore. (AP) — Police in riot gear fired paintballs filled with cayenne pepper Thursday night to disperse a crowd of protesters assembled in this historic gold mining town where President Bush was spending the night after a campaign appearance.

Witnesses said Bush supporters were on one side of California Street chanting "Four more years," and supporters of Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry were on the other chanting "Three more weeks." Police began moving the crowd away from the Jacksonville Inn, where the president was to arrive for a dinner and to spend the night following his speech.

"We were here to protest Bush and show our support for Kerry," said Cerridewen Bunten, 24, a college student and retail clerk from Ashland. "Nobody was being violent. We were out of the streets so cars could go by. We were being loud, but I never knew that was against the law."

Bunten said she was pushed by police as she held her 6-year-old daughter.

2. I want my country back NOW!
from your link:

Richard Swaney, 65, of Central Point, said had joined in a peaceful protest outside the Jackson County fairgrounds where Bush spoke, and then went to Jacksonville to join the protest there.

He said he was walking with the crowd away from the inn when he was hit in the back with three separate bursts, one of which knocked him down. He felt a stinging sensation he thought was rubber bullets and smelled pepper.

"I don't think I moved fast enough," said Swaney. "I can't believe this happens in the United States. It was very peaceful. I think this is the way tyranny begins."

4. This is how "insurgency" starts. The people of the united states will NOT
tolerate this type of behavior to continue. The president and the gorverment work FOR the people.. they are NOT in charge OF the people.

The repuke party will fall.. and hard. The funny thing is, it will be a huge shock to them when they find themselves standing alone in a very small minority.

27. Yes, we need to shoot back, so everyone should come armed...
...with a video camera.

Violence begets violence. But seeing police abuse on the "TV screen" can energize a much wider swatch of people.

See Cop Watch for more information on how this works.

25. they LIE like nobody else
Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 09:15 AM by tinanator
When I went to NYC that was what I saw repeatedly. Police spokesfucks telling lies about peaceful and cooperative protestors that were arrested summarily, without warning or just cause. It is incumbent upon witnesses to speak the facts and most importantly to publicly label the liars by name. Direct PUBLIC confrontation of the liars is absolutely critical, otherwise they win.

26. Civil Liberties?
Teachers' T-shirts bring Bush speech ouster

From Bend.com news sources
Posted: Thursday, October 14, 2004 10:24 PM
Reference Code: PR-18712

October 14 - MEDFORD – President Bush taught three Oregon schoolteachers a new lesson in irony – or tragedy – Thursday night when his campaign removed them from a Bush speech and threatened them with arrest simply for wearing t-shirts that said “Protect Our Civil Liberties,” the Democratic Party of Oregon reported.

The women were ticketed to the event, admitted into the event, and were then approached by event officials before the president’s speech. They were asked to leave and to turn over their tickets – two of the three tickets were seized, but the third was saved when one of the teachers put it underneath an article of clothing.

>snip<

>>>The AP reported:

Three Medford school teachers were threatened with arrest and escorted from the event after they showed up wearing T-shirts with the slogan "Protect our civil liberties." All three said they applied for and received valid tickets from Republican headquarters in Medford.

The women said they did not intend to protest. "I wanted to see if I would be able to make a statement that I feel is important, but not offensive, in a rally for my president," said Janet Voorhies, 48, a teacher in training.

“We chose this phrase specifically because we didn't think it would be offensive or degrading or obscene," said Tania Tong, 34, a special education teacher.

Thursday’s event in Oregon sets a new bar for a Bush/Cheney campaign that has taken extraordinary measures to screen the opinions of those who attend Bush and Cheney speeches. For months, the Bush/Cheney campaign has limited event access to those willing to volunteer in Bush/Cheney campaign offices. In recent weeks, the Bush/Cheney campaign has gone so far as to have those who voice dissenting viewpoints at their events arrested and charged as criminals.<<<

38. This song comes to mind....
There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware
I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind
I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side
It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away
We better stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, now, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

I hope we won't be singing Crosby Stills Nash and Young's, "Four Dead in Ohio" next......

60. This makes me sick in my Rogue Valley and beautiful Jacksonville
Its a gold mining town from way back that is a gorgeous residential and tourist site. The town was used in the Great Northfield Minnesota Raid, a movie about Jesse James.

Its got houses that are historical and the Jacksonville Inn is beautiful. No way they deserved this. I'm from Central Point and I'm proud of them for going there. I would have gone too if I still lived there. Its so sad to hear this stuff. I despair of getting rid of it sometimes.

I tell you, if this can happen in Medford and Jacksonville, there's no place it can't happen.

64. The Crawford Iconoclast carried a story on *'s attack dog tactics
written by a former Austinite who was there in Jacksonville. Here's the story:
http://www.iconoclast-texas.com/Columns/Guest/guest42a.htm

Here's one excerpt:
"In small town American I witnessed true repression and intimidation
by law enforcement. I saw small children suffering from the effects
of being fired upon by pepper bullets. I felt legitimate fear of
expressing my political opinions: a brand new feeling. Newspaper
accounts state the chaos started when a violent "Protester" shoved a
police officer. No one I talked to witnessed this account.

It is reputed that President Bush and his staff will not allow any
opposition activity to occur within his ear or eye sight. I can
confirm, that in tiny Jacksonville, Oregon, this was true. Physically
violent means were taken to protect the president from verbal
insults. Freedom of speech was stolen."
