Cheney: Jobs Best Solution for Poverty
Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 11:29 AM by party_line
BERRIEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites), asked Friday what he and President Bush (news - web sites) would do to help the working poor, said "the best solution for poverty is a job" and contended their tax policies would help small businesses create more of them.

"What most people want is a good-paying job that will allow them to take care of their families," Cheney said during a campaign stop at a restaurant.

The question came from Cyndi Sanders, who lives in Benton Harbor, an impoverished community along Lake Michigan. Benton Harbor was devastated by two nights of rioting last year after a black motorcyclist died during a high-speed police chase. The rioting and public outcry that followed highlighted its struggling economy.

And rest is the best solution for fatigue, Grasshopper.

25. yes--a full plan could be offered
1. raise minimum wage
2. offer subsidized health care (this helps workers and employers)
3. raise the poverty line to something realistic so that more people are protected from paying income taxes
4. end predatory financial practices against workers (high bank fees, pay day loans, etc.)
5. encourage unionization and collective bargaining

30. Exactly
And he and his GOP friends fight every minimum wage increase. Well, hello, two people working full time at a job paying minimum wage are still at (or below) the poverty level!

They keep talking about education, well, I know this doesn't sound p.c. & I still think everyone should have a chance at education, but some people just aren't as smart as others. And some body has to ask "do you want fries with that" but shouldn't that person be entitled to a decent standard of living?

There are plenty of people with BAs and MAs working for minimum wages right now. And they can't go back to school if they get behind in their student loan repayments, so forget about retraining for a different field. The whole system is broken.

42. Increasing minimum wage isn't the answer
Supply/demand curves from Economics 101 indicate that higher minimum wage results in higher unemployment because higher labor costs cause employers to lay off workers.

If employers in aggregate choose not to lay off workers and instead pass on the higher labor cost to consumers then we have higher inflation.

No such thing as a free lunch.....

48. There is no connection between min-wage and the unemployment rate.
None. Zippo. This is a myth. Statistics on min-wage and unemployment
show the opposite, if they show anything, but mostly they show no
particular connection at all, other factors are much more important.

59. Wage restriction is the problem....
business is able to exert greater influence than single workers in the system: they have the power, the will to organize and no statutory enforcement to prevent it, while workers face harassment, legal barriers to organization, and mass numbers to coordinate. This results in excess revenues to business directly from the coffers of workers, resulting in lower sales (you didn't think business owners were the main consumers of the world, didja?), spiraling into job layoffs.

However, the recapture of actual earned wages by the legal imposition of a wage floor results in higher incomes for workers and higher sales for business. The minimum wage exists to address a power imbalance and a maldistribution of business revenues.

Higher wages create jobs, not cost them. Example: You have a million dollars to build a beautiful new upscale restaurant somewhere - East LA or Palm Springs? I'd say you'd choose Palm Springs because the revenues for your business are there. Why? Wages are higher.

People having money creates jobs. People not having money destroys jobs. Inflation is a function of the quantity of money being put into the economy by the Fed. Wages not a factor, but instead a reaction to, inflation.

This is Econ 101. I've been teaching it for nine years.

US to lose more than 400,000 jobs this year

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1521&e=...

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States will lose more than 400,000 jobs this year to Mexico, China, India and other Asian nations as multinational corporations restructure operations and shift production overseas, a study showed.

The number of jobs lost will be around double those three years ago, according to the study by Cornell University and the University of Massachusetts for the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission.

The study came amid heated debate ahead of the November 2 presidential elections on outsourcing of jobs to China, India and other developing economies and its adverse impacts on employment at home.
